Media Officer

Position Objectives:

  • To build media relationships
  • To find opportunities to promote the animal rights message through different mediums
  • To generate media coverage for PETA's campaigns, including handling interviews and organising news releases and statements

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Develop new pitch ideas and ways to increase media coverage for animal rights issues using independent judgement
  • Pitch PETA's work to the media
  • Develop plans to reach specific audiences according to each media project
  • Cultivate relationships with journalists and other members of the media
  • Stay informed about current events and celebrity news
  • Prepare and manage news releases
  • Develop target lists for issue and campaign coverage
  • Respond to media queries and prepare media statements
  • Serve as a media spokesperson on animal rights issues
  • Solicit free placement for print advertisements and video public service announcements
  • Track and analyse the results of each media pitch and adjust efforts accordingly
  • Maintain the contacts database, clippings files and other records in an organised fashion
  • Participate in brainstorming meetings
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor


  • Experience in a similar role
  • Thorough commitment to and knowledge of animal rights issues and campaigns
  • Sophisticated understanding and appreciation of creative work
  • Proven excellent strategic-thinking skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proactive, self-motivated and the proven ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people
  • Proven excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to take initiative and follow through
  • Proven ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Interest in celebrity culture
  • Adherence to vegetarian or vegan lifestyle
  • Supportive position vis-à-vis PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organisation
