Science Policy Advisor

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Foundation UK – an affiliate of PETA US, which is the largest animal rights organisation in the world – is dedicated to establishing and protecting the rights of all animals, educating policymakers and the public about cruelty to animals and promoting an understanding of the right of all animals to be treated with respect. PETA UK and its affiliates work through public education, research, policy initiatives, legislative reform, media campaigns and awareness-raising campaigns.

Position Objective:

  • To execute research, policy and campaign support for animal protection issues, including the use of animals in experiments
  • To provide research support for a wide range of projects involving issues related to animal testing
  • To act as PETA's media spokesperson on animal testing issues

Reports to:
Associate Director, PETA Foundation

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Independently research and interpret a variety of scientific issues and other issues related to animal testing in order to further PETA's goals
  • Collaborate with the manager and the UK policy advisor to decide on and obtain the necessary data for factsheets, white papers, reports, correspondence and other literature
  • Consult with the Senior Director of PETA US' Regulatory Testing Division and the Senior Vice President of PETA US' Laboratory Investigations Department for ideas on PETA UK campaign activities
  • Build relationships and maintain communication with key audiences, particularly decision-makers in the legislative, administrative and clinical arenas
  • Develop expertise in non-animal testing methods
  • Respond to correspondence regarding issues related to animal testing
  • Conduct analyses of technical papers and translate scientific terminology into lay terms for use in research projects
  • Maintain confidentiality at all times
  • Communicate PETA's philosophy to the public
  • Represent PETA at public-speaking engagements, in debates, to the media and to the general public
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor

Qualifications:

  • Degree in a related field
  • Experience in working on campaigns a plus
  • Fluency in a second European language desirable but not essential
  • Familiarity with use of animals in laboratories and a thorough knowledge of animal rights issues
  • Proven familiarity with animal testing issues and the ability to apply medical and scientific terminology
  • Familiarity with government agencies
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research
  • Proven excellent writing and research skills
  • Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously
  • Public-speaking skills
  • Ability to work evenings and weekends, if necessary
  • Willingness and ability to travel, as needed
  • Support for PETA's philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA's positions on issues
  • Commitment to the objectives of the organisation
