Benjy Arrives at Sanctuary With Help From Sam Simon!

Posted by 2 years ago | Permalink | Comments (43)

With help from The Simpsons co-creator Sam Simon, Benjy – an Irish bull previously slated for slaughter because of his reported sexual orientation – made it to Hillside Sanctuary on Sunday, where he will breathe fresh air, graze freely and never again face the threat of imminent slaughter. Benjy Arrives at Hillside DSC_0341 Simon helped make Benjy’s rescue possible. “I believe in compassion and empathy for all living beings – regardless of age, gender, race, sexual orientation or species. That’s why when PETA told me about ‘Benjy, the gay bull’, I felt compelled to help”, he said. “All animals have a dire destiny in the meat and dairy industries, but for Benjy to have been killed because of his sexual orientation would have been a double tragedy.”

“My health won’t allow me to travel to the UK to see Benjy in his new home, but it thrills me to know that his fate is a sanctuary rather than a sandwich, and I know the folks at PETA … will keep me updated on his progress”, says Simon. DSC_0329 Simon also hopes Benjy’s story will inspire others to help animals: “While it will be a happy holiday season for Benjy, it won’t be for the millions of other animals on farms living in their own filth, denied everything that is natural and important to them”, says Simon. “I’d encourage anyone moved by Benjy’s plight to help other animals like him by choosing to leave all animals off their plates and opt for a vegan Christmas dinner.” For inspiration on how to opt for a vegan Christmas dinner, visit our guide to having a vegan Christmas feast with all the trimmings.

PETA does so much for the welfare of animals. Animals are to be loved not for food. The meat industry makes fools out of meat eaters as they fatten their wallets. Take one look at a slaughter house. First of all anyone who could work there has problems . Also they have no regard for sanitation. Not to mention the cruelty & torture to animals. Thank you peta.

    • Kristine commented on December 16, 2014 at 2:05 am

      Amen to that!!

    • Joshua commented on December 30, 2014 at 2:15 am

What do you mean by having no regard for sanitation? Have you ever heard of a thing called the USDA? At all meat packing plants they are required by law to scrub down meat processesing plant from top to bottom everyday and that the health inspector that is in place at all meat packing plants will not allow the plant to operate until this has been done and until the plant meets sanitation standards.

  • Janet Barnes commented on December 15, 2014 at 12:09 pm

Dear PETA We tried out the but roast recipe from your vegan Christmas booklet. We added cumin to it. It was fantastic. I’d recommend it. Thank you

Dog bless you, Sam Simon. ♥
    And PETA. ♥
And all those who realized that non-human animals are not on this planet for human animals to use, abuse, eat, exploit or harm in any way. ♥
    I am vegan.

Read Genesis 9:3 from the Bible. I guarantee you will think differently about this matter.

      • Leti commented on April 9, 2015 at 5:16 pm

Genisis 9:3 is horrible and couldn’t be more wrong.

  • Suzanne Cowley commented on December 15, 2014 at 9:10 pm

Please remove that awful nose ring!! Bless him

    • Jessica Manke commented on December 17, 2014 at 12:27 am

The nose ring is for human safety. since he is an intact male, his testosterone levels are very high and he can be very aggressive towards other creatures including humans. The nose ring is to distract him from harming people.

Thank you PETA and Sam Simon!! <3 <3
when I read about this bull weeks ago, I found it ridiculous and terribly sad. I am so happy/relieved to read that his story reached far and you saved him. 🙂 Thank you, thank you!!!

  • Kim Kissen commented on December 15, 2014 at 9:14 pm

Stop destroying household pets or I will withdraw my support had been shocked and dismayed reading reports of thousands of dogs and cats destroyed by your organization for no apparent reason

    • Anne commented on December 16, 2014 at 11:27 am

Hi Kim, please take a few minutes to learn the truth about PETA US’ heartbreaking work:

  • Jacob H commented on December 15, 2014 at 9:25 pm

Its so sad how animals are treated. They are the most innocent, as innocent as a toddler or new born. They were put here on this Earth by Gods will and that’s where they will stay. Good job PETA for rescuing this beloved Cow, Benjy, and all the other work you do. You at PETA truly are Angels!

  • sheila samuel commented on December 15, 2014 at 9:43 pm

I see when PETA haters try to ‘expose” you, concerning the animals that are humanely euthanized.Don’t worry,I understand about overpopulation, and how it limits the options.reminds me of right to lifers who have no intention of caring for any of these children once they are born.Been with PETA for a long time, and plan to ,for the long and respect Ingrid, and all of the organization.

  • Ellen Leiss commented on December 15, 2014 at 9:44 pm

Thank God that he was saved ! <3

  • Genkibond commented on December 15, 2014 at 10:25 pm

sorry, but Peta’s hypocrisy is just too much.
Go ahead, I don’t mind that you anthropomorphize a bull with the label “gay”.
It creates a visceral reaction as to the unfairness of a situation.
But don’t trumpet your victory with 1 steer saved from the food chain while you kill adoptable puppies and kittens in your shelters.

  • Sarah commented on December 15, 2014 at 10:43 pm

Oh that’s not fair, pretty much most bulls ride each other so that would mean they would all be sent to slaughter, a bit silly that one I think! Glad he is saved!

  • Maureen Oxborough commented on December 15, 2014 at 10:55 pm

i am so glad bendy has been rescued, I don’t know why we eat meat, I am a Christian and gods word says every thing on an animal is eatable, but it also says do not judge those who don’t, I am slowly becoming a person who is not eating meat, at the moment I eat chicken, turkey, fish, tuna, I also eat vegetarian food, as far as I am concerned animals were created for our pleasure not cruelty, I have seen to much of what they do to gods creatures and it’s wrong, I have joined peta to stop animal abuse, and I have ordered a vegan kit, so eventually I will be a vegan, keep up the good work saving our animals .

  • Bob Ricewasser commented on December 15, 2014 at 11:11 pm

I hope that the nose ring is removed & that Benjy will have an enjoyable, peaceful life at a sanctuary.

Heck yeah! 🙂 good going PETA. It makes me so happy to read positive success like this. I want more of this to happen. I know we can do it. You make me a proud supporter. Thank you

  • linda caldwell commented on December 16, 2014 at 3:45 am

Well this just makes me remember our poor little “Itchy”. He was a Chihuahua that thought he was 10 feet tall. Not to mention he was gay also. Boy that didn’t go over well with the boys in the house but we rescued so many animals for so long here and he managed to live to a very old “human” age of over 100, so he didn’t do too bad! He was just a happy little guy that never wanted any trouble with anyone. He was just wired differently. Everyone deserves to live.

Extremely well stated. I am not condoning homosexuality – not religious, just don’t find it natural – however, not a reason to kill ANY animals, a category to which I believe we belong. Thank you PETA.

  • Paola commented on December 16, 2014 at 5:52 am

    Thank you Peta.

  • etienne commented on December 16, 2014 at 9:09 am

  • Cindy Jensen commented on December 16, 2014 at 10:13 am

This is a great story about Benjy,I am happy for his safe life. It’s a feel good story with the animal abuse that is happening esp with all horses right before our eyes and it goes on. Horrible!

  • Ellen Ball commented on December 16, 2014 at 1:26 pm

Sam Simon I am sorry for our failing health but you have bestowed blessings on animals that need rescuing. I pray or you and send love and healing light.

  • Stephanie commented on December 16, 2014 at 2:59 pm

Really? Y’all honestly think a bull can be gay? Please do some research and know the facts before posting and making your selves look so ignorant. Maybe while you research eat some steak. Your bodies may need a little more protein or iron. Studies show, lack of protein and iron can cause one to believe in things that are unrealistic.

  • Laura commented on December 16, 2014 at 10:36 pm

I can respect everyone else’s opinions because we are all different with our own beliefs. However I laugh at the ignorance of people. Cattle are naturally homosexual. He was not going to be killed for his sexual orientation. Yes, this bull may have been spared life, but to say it was for his sexual orientation is just ridiculous.

  • Dave commented on December 17, 2014 at 3:02 am

Does this mean that it’s okay to be gay?

  • EoinKoenigBaio commented on December 18, 2014 at 11:39 pm

That was a nice thing to do. Good that he is safe.

  • Dar Dar Dar commented on December 19, 2014 at 3:42 am

Apparently, you people have absolutely no clue what you are talking about. The nose ring on that “gay” bull is to be used for control when leading him. He obviously has a problem with being cooperative, otherwise they wouldn’t have put it in him.
Turn that dude out on some cows, not other bulls, bet you would find out really quick that he’s not gay.

  • phil commented on December 25, 2014 at 4:14 pm

And the idea that he is gay is so ridiculous only ignorant morons would ever buy that cattle is what iI live and breathe every day and so yea i know you guys are absolutely retarted

  • phil commented on December 25, 2014 at 4:16 pm

Oh and some moron even called the bull a cow hahahahaha

  • Lucas commented on December 30, 2014 at 1:11 am

We have over 400 cows that i suspect of being gay. Do them a huge favor and spare them the risk of being harvested… Buy them from me for a nominal fee of say…. $4500 a hd?

    • Spencer commented on January 11, 2015 at 10:18 pm

Haha I like the way you think sir. Back home I also have another 250 head that are gayer then a richard simons date night.

  • LLLK commented on December 30, 2014 at 1:51 am

Wow……shows how being removed from the farm x2-3 generations is hurting the common sense of the world. All bulls and cows will mount each other.

  • Alyssa commented on December 31, 2014 at 6:54 pm

People are stupid. The bull isn’t gay. All bovine will mount eachother if put under pressure. So calling him gay, is incorrect. And sorry PETA. But I love meat. My family owns 350 head of cattle, and we will continue to raise them untill they are sized enough to slaughter. We also kill deer. Because their meat is good also. This bull, he will die of old age. In the stall he is in. And y’all will have a great time getting the tractor to pick him up.
