David Cameron, Stop Clowning Around – Ban Wild Animal Circuses Now!

Posted by 3 years ago | Permalink | Comments (327)

Despite having been instructed by Parliament in 2011 to get wild animals out of circuses, David Cameron has been heel-dragging and stalling on implementing a ban. Whilst the government has finally begun work on draft legislation, it’s insisting on primary legislation which could take years, prolonging the suffering of wild animals in circuses, rather than enacting an immediate ban under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act.

In 2011, a Defra consultation saw 94 per cent of respondents, including the British Veterinary Association, backing an end to this archaic form of entertainment. Earlier this year, PETA, along with other major animal protection organisations, boycotted a second pointless and costly consultation because the questions did not allow for the rejection of the licensing provision, which would enable abusive circuses to hide behind a veneer of respectability.

Wild animals in circuses commonly suffer from chronic health problems, abusive treatment, psychological disorders and aberrant behaviour, and many die prematurely. By virtue of the very nature of circuses – which confine animals to cages or boxcars, force them to perform tricks which are totally unnatural to them and deny them the opportunity to engage in natural behaviour – animal welfare can never be ensured in a circus environment. Please urge MPs to take action to protect wild animals used in circuses now.

It’s not possible to provide, within a circus environment, for an animal’s normal behaviours to be adequately expressed. Also, it is intrinsically wrong to use animals for “our” entertainment in this way. Good luck with the campaign.

  • Teresa Orris commented on September 4, 2012 at 4:25 pm

Circuses are nothing but slavery and torture for a wild animal! This is not entertainment and is on its way to dying out as such!!

stop circuses using and abusing any animals. circuses should just employ willing people, animals can’t make those choices so leave them alone, they are not yours to use, they belong to this planet and have the same rights as people to exist without being imprisoned and tortured for moronic people who would support this cruel non-entertainment.

  • Bernadette Vong commented on September 28, 2012 at 12:54 pm

    Dear Mr. Cameron

I don’t know if you know what it feels like to be a puppet, being pulled your every string to do something you do not naturally do. It’s wide known that animal has emotions and can experience stress just as humans do. They cannot speak our language doesn’t mean they are subjected to all sorts of humiliation, unreasonable punishment (because they refuse to do tricks), being starved because they do not obey. If your mother were treating you like that, you would have ran away or kill yourself a long time ago.

Being rational in our judgement is one of the gifts we are lucky to have as human. I’m sure your perfect judgement would also agree that wild life animals should not suffer for entertainment purposes. Please show your people the government you lead is capable to stand up against cruelty in any means, not just against terrorism. You know this is something you can do, and you can save so many wild life animals that many people will cheer for you to do so.

I hope that you see the importance in this, it’s 20th century, animals entertainment is barbaric, and it should not allow to happen in this country.

    Thank you for listening.

We outlawed sending small boys up chimneys, together with bear baiting – it is barbaric that in this, so called, civilised country, we allow circus owners to exploit wild animals. These animals have shortened, miserable lives and should be living a free natural life. The picture of the baby elephant is the stuff of nightmares! Do something to stop this brutality and torment – NOW!

My message to you Mr Cameron is this: why has this not been banned why are wild and beautiful animals still being trussed up and pranced around in front of silly audiences of people who are ignorant to what goes on behind the scenes and what these poor animals suffer.

Why, when you have it in your power to stop this cruelty have you not done anything about it.

David Cameron – Re: Circus Acts
How shocking of you! You know that the UK is an animal loving country. Why? Because we have compassion in our heart and we find it abhorrent for animals to be forced to entertain us by having to manipulate their bodies into abnormal, uncharacteristic shapes just for some people’s enjoyment. Anyone with compassion who has the ability to help these poor creatures and doesn’t must truly be a wretched person indeed. To ignore cruelty makes you an accomplice to it. Mr D Cameron PM – UK; you are an accomplice and supporter of cruelty in this country.

Come on Prime Minister, You are a man with power. Please use it to stop an outdated and cruel use of animals in circuses. There are many people that are against such entertainment and you could win voters by showing how compassionate you and your party can be. The animals in question are routinely beaten and kept in cages only big enough to house their bodies with nowhere to move. Also the animals are asked to do acts they would never do in their own environment. The animals do not need to be in circuses and you could help to stop their exploitation, so please take time to care and do something for them..

It’s absolutely shocking that the government are dragging their feet regarding using wild animals in circuses even though evidence shows that most of the British public want it banned. It’s cruel to have sensitive wild animals living in cramped and unnatural conditions causing them suffering and distress and for what ‘entertainment’??? It’s no entertainment for the animals involved and what is it teaching our children? I wouldn’t dream of taking my 3 yr old to a circus with animals in it as its not entertainment and I don’t want him seeing distressed elephants, tigers, horses and camels behaving in a very unnatural way! They belong in the wild and that’s where I want him to see them or at the very least a sanctuary that allows the animals to behave in a more natural way.

fao Mr Cameron I urge you to rethink on this, these animals are wild and do not need to put on show and do tricks and in most cases get beaten to perform we are in the 21st century now please have some compassion 9 out of 10 children think it is not right to see animals like this its barbarick

  • Rose Ogorzaly commented on October 4, 2012 at 2:23 pm

    Dear Sir:
Perhaps if you require circuses to follow the example of Cirque du Soleil (no animal acts allowed, only talented human acrobats), these circus owners will eventually realize that paying humans to perform is more is more profitable than beating wild animals to submission.
    Thank you for your time.

  • Meher Toorkey commented on October 4, 2012 at 3:41 pm

It is no surprise that Mr Cameron is dragging his heels regarding a ban on wild animals in circuses. He is obviously supremely unconcerned about animal welfare. He loves hunting. What gives him great joy is to shoot two stags together, cull all our badgers, push forward funds for cruel animal experimentation. In short, he is the worst thing that could possibly have happened for this country , especially it’s animals. And we all know how people who are cruel to animals behave to the old & children as well. The sooner he is removed from office , the better!

Hi Dave. Kill any animals today? Not yet? You’d better get busy or someone else will get to set their dogs on those poor foxes, kill a few badgers or torture lions, tigers and elephants with cattle prods and of course, the mighty bull hook. Perhaps you’re out drinking and bragging with your friends about your latest triumphs? Isn’t that what you do, Davey? Boast about how much blood you’ve spilled? Well guess what, I’ve got a little secret for you. It doesn’t matter how many women, children or animals you torture or kill, your little penis is still not going to get any bigger, Peewee. Thanks for your time, Dave. Always interesting chatting with perverts, sadists and psycho like you. Hope to hear from you soon. Bye FOR NOW.

We are supposed to be a nation that is civilised, forward thinking – respect for life is the absolute pinnacle of these things – and until Mr Cameron does this, he keeps us in the dark ages.

When one is in a position of power, it should absolutely be used for good. There is nothing simpler than stopping unneccesary cruelty. It’s not something which has an argument against it – it is quite simply the pure and most basic fact of life. Respect FOR life – ALL life.

And ALL hunting of Animal ( in the false name of sport ) has to be banned >>> It is NOT sport it is inhumane Animal cruelty & suffering.

Remember Mary chipperfields, and the most recent Annie the elephant, these are all absolutely shocking videos of amazing animals being hurt by somebody that doesn’t care about them. A real circus does not need animals to entertain, the good ones ie cirque de soliel (probably one of the best in the world) are based on people doing the acts and that is how it should be.

    Dear Sir,
We are not by the most part a backward Nation looking to the past for our entertainment, bear bating, cock fighting, lions, tigers in cages, the mighty elephant made to perform in the most hideous, unatural ways. Ok, forget bear baiting and cock fighting, however, bare in mind dog fighting still goes on in our enlightened modern day, animal loving nation. However, to the point, there is no place, under any circumstances should we still see wild animals, caged and brutilized to perform in unatural ways as entertainment in circuses. We have seen many times in the media how circus animals are vunerable, kept in poor conditions and mistreated. This is indeed looking backwards to the dark ages. Please allow us to move on and show some compassion by implementing an immediate ban under section 12 of the Animal Welfare Act and put an end to animals the suffering.

  • Jane McCulloch commented on December 10, 2012 at 11:36 pm

Why doesnt your organization to something about the circus that comes to Monaco every year? It’s the most popular circus in Europe and when I attended last year it made me sick to my stomach. They drug and starve the animals and the circus is attended by the richest people in the world. If your organization wants to make an impact and a statement they should protest the crique international de monte carlo.

Think about It the animals would be grateful.

I live in France. Every year the animal circus comes to town. Thousands of tickets are sold , they call this entertainment and they reckon it is a nice opportunity for kids here to see wild animals up close. This needs to stop now. Did you know that Bull Fighting is also a spectators sport here in France…bet you thought it was only happening in Spain….!! There is no place for any of this in the so called modern world we are supposed to be?

Another thing… ban the sale of Foie Gras in England as they did in California. The way you can help with this is to stop buying food from an outlet that stocks it…eventually they will stop selling Foie Gras.

Wouldn’t you like to make a stunning difference to something that would please thousands of people in this country and many more abroad?
How would you like to be magnificent in character yet forced down to become a slave of entertainment? We are talking about elephants, tigers and lions. It is criminal for them to be whipped and forced into doing something so unnatural to them that life is not worth living. When you are hungry you eat – if only they would not eat, which seems to be the only way out for them.
Be a gentleman and do something good for them. The best thing you can do is to ban all animals from circuses. Educated people abhor such cruelty. You know that don’t you? Then please save them.

They cart them off to their planet in metal cages and make them perform rediculous tricks for their paying customers and if they don’t perform these pointless tricks they’re beaten to within an inch of their lives. Think about it and stop this barbarick despicable travisty we call entertainment. And you’re a Christian too!!! Don’t really think God saved the animals for this kind of treatment, do you?????? I’m an athiest for this reason and a vegatarian. If you look back through history, and it doesn’t matter which way you cut it, they are our cousins.
