Dogs and Cats in Trouble in Ukraine

Update: ‎70 PETA Germany activists held a protest in front of the Ukrainian Embassy in Berlin today 16 November to protest the cat and dog killing prior to the European Championship 2012.

Did you know that in Ukraine, a dog or cat found wandering the streets can be shot on sight or poisoned and left to suffer? Their bodies are tossed into a cremation truck and burned, and some are reportedly burned while alive. It is estimated that in the city of Kiev alone, 20,000 dogs have already been killed in these cruel ways.

Ukrainian authorities are trying to “cleanse” the country of homeless animals before it hosts the European Football Championship in 2012. At a preliminary match between Germany and Ukraine in Kiev last weekend, members of PETA Germany and the Kiev Society for the Protection of Animals protested, calling on Ukrainian authorities to stop the cruel killings and asking the Union of European Football Associations to get involved.

Many German football players have now joined PETA Germany in publicly criticising Ukrainian authorities for the torture of these dogs and demanding that the city use humane methods to manage the homeless-animal crisis. The only solution to animal overpopulation is a spay-and-neuter initiative, but in the meantime, the city’s unwanted animals at least deserve a peaceful, painless end to their lives.

Please contact the Ukrainian Ambassador in London and politely urge him to stop these cruel killings immediately. Send polite comments to:

It is incredible how people treat their wandering animals in such a cruel way, they could at least provide them a painless death, in case there is no other solution. And this is just to ‘cleanse’ the place for a championship. Hope more people join the campanig against this event, including more footballers.

Its true. I go to Ukraine in Lviv to my grandparents every year, there are countless stray dogs and cats. People have no money to even feed them scraps. This is the reason why there are so many homeless and people have no money to spay their animals. But i have never known about shooting or killing. This must be stopped.

Please do something about the overbreeding of these poor dogs and cats so that you can stop killing them so cruelly.

Killing wild dogs and cats does indeed sound tragic, but is there any actual proof of whether or not it was humane? I imagine that living on the streets isn’t a very good life, and euthanasia can be justified, but theres no evidence of its application here…

If this nation treats companion animals with such deadly irreverence, only satan could imagine the cruelty that is perpetrated against wildlife !

If it’s a poor country then maybe the richer countries such as ours should donate to pay for spay and neutering and also send in teams of vets and veterinary nurses to help with the spay and neutering

I am an Indian, and almost every day getting news of killing dogs from my facebook friends. As we all are aware that dogs are the best friends of human being, very close to us than any other animal. Why they are killed by the orders of Ukrain Government, I dont know the reason behind it. I have no authority, how to stop these killing. If there is any petition site kindly inform me, I shall really be thankful. I have also appealed at my fb account.
