Morrissey Stands Up for Elephants

Never one to shy away from sharing an opinion, Morrissey lent the spotlight at his recent Boston, Massachusetts, gig to help get the word out about elephants suffering in a circus act.

PETA US has filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Agriculture after someone in the audience of a Ringling circus sent them a video showing a handler hooking and striking an elephant named Luna—who has a history of leg problems—with a bullhook. Moz’s bandmates took to the stage in T-shirts reading “Ringling Beats Animals” to spread the word.

Morrissey and his band choose to perform, but circus animals are forced to perform, often through violence. Wild animals in circuses commonly suffer from chronic health problems, abusive treatment, psychological disorders and aberrant behaviour, and many die prematurely.

Here in the UK, David Cameron has been heel-dragging and stalling on implementing a ban to get wild animals out of circuses, despite having been instructed by Parliament in 2011 to implement it. Please urge the Prime Minister to take action to protect wild animals used in circuses now.

This cruelty really has to be stopped, wild animals need to be free, it’s the humans that deal out such cruelty that should be locked up and beaten

  • Michelle O'Malley commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:07 pm

Its about time this charade of the UK being a country of animal lovers, when we continue to allow animals to be abused for our entertainment – Please sort it out Mr Cameron

    Urge prohibir circos con animales…

    Pongan el ejemplo

  • Sandra Sheppard commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:12 pm

In this day and age there is absolutely no reason for animals to be exhibited in circuses and forced to perform tricks for the entertainment of spectators and the monetry increase of the circus owners.

  • linda duncan commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:14 pm

these animals were born to be free,in their natural habitat, and not used for entertainment for others and of course the money they bring in,and in most cases are not treated very well.if you have a concience and a heart mr cameron please please ban this forever.

How can a civilised country allow the suffering of animals for our entertainment. Stand up for our creatures!!

  • Lara Phillips commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:24 pm

    Stand up for our animals!

  • Tanya Scott commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:54 pm

To use animals for entertainment is abhorrent and vile. You have the power to stop this ‘legal’ form of animal abuse.

  • Sarah Hill commented on October 12, 2012 at 2:59 pm

    Dear Mr Cameron
    Outlaw this miserable cruelty NOW!

  • Fred Nye commented on October 12, 2012 at 3:15 pm

I think this government is gutless, since it is pretty obvious that the majority of the public would support a ban,& it is not as if there would be a backlash to face, except from the cruel circus people, who don’t matter anyway.

  • Kerry Bullen commented on October 12, 2012 at 3:23 pm

I can’t believe in this day and age that we still use animals for entertainment,
this practice should be banned to stop their suffering..

  • Jayne commented on October 12, 2012 at 3:50 pm

We already have one big circus in Westminster, stop clowning around and get some legislation passed to stop the use of wild animals in circuses. Please..

  • Suzi Tomlinson commented on October 12, 2012 at 3:58 pm

How can you sleep at night knowing that pain and abuse is going on in circuse, how would your children feel, after seeing these disgusting images knowing you can stop this. these animals dont have a choice or a voice to stop this we have to do this for them, otherwise this so called entertainment will continue when there is no need for it. Please stop circuses using animals.

  • GILL MARKEY commented on October 12, 2012 at 4:07 pm

Please stop dragging your feet, help BAN all animals in circuses.

  • Sarah Moloney commented on October 12, 2012 at 5:48 pm

Dear Mr Cameron, the thoughts of mankind have evolved since the Victorian age. Long gone are the days when animals were considered to be unfeeling life forms. The modern Zoo boasts its treatment and respect of animals kept within. Large enclosure and well thought out enrichment policies are all the “rage” and poor treatment of animals is exposed and the perpetrators are seen to be condemned for their actions. So why have you not acted on the evidence laid before you? Condemn this cruel and barbaric treatment and enslavement of these animals for so called entertainment. Lets as a Country stand up and SAY NO TO ANIMAL CRUELTY.

  • sandra lyttleton commented on October 12, 2012 at 6:40 pm

Why don’t do you do something good and stop the cruelty to the poor animals, you are all mouth and no action.

  • Gwen Davies commented on October 12, 2012 at 8:34 pm

Lets get horrific circuses that torture animals both emotionally and physically stopped!!!!! Outdated, unwanted , unnecessary and cruel!!!!!!!!!!

  • nicola thomson commented on October 12, 2012 at 10:43 pm

please think about all animals and not just fight for some humans!!!!

  • Brien Comerford commented on October 13, 2012 at 12:42 am

Thousands of elephants in Africa are being poached and massacred into oblivion for their ivory. Nothing is being done about it. As usual China is involved in most of the elephant killings. Conservationists predict that African Elephants will be extinct by the year 2025. This is an abomination and the useless United Nations does not even care nor does the inept African Union.

  • Sandy Gray commented on October 13, 2012 at 2:27 am

I agree with Hugh Grant, we need an independent arbitrator to find out why David Cameron doesn’t want to collapse the media circus!

  • Di Pugh commented on October 15, 2012 at 4:39 pm

David Cameron has been told to sort this and he still hasn’t – Why! What are his views? I really want to know. Surely he is an inteligent man and can see that this is not acceptable.

Mr cameron is out of touch with reality… what good has he ever done for humans anyway let alone animals, … animals are by far the superior of all species, one day it will be us humans in the circus ring cruelly treated and forced to perform, and it wont be the animals who make us do that, they know better, because they are!

  • Libuse Mikova commented on October 29, 2012 at 7:12 pm

I am sorry about the beautiful elephants who had to work in circus theater. Stop use the elephants and all animals for circus bussines.Let elephants and other animals to live free life in nature where they were born and we will be happy as well.

Help these poor Animals being used to make money, they deserve a life not locked up and having to perform…

  • jan pedley commented on January 31, 2014 at 5:16 pm

I watched in tears the Ringling undercover video, those trainers hit the elephants constantly for no apparent reason. They hit them hard in the face, every minute they just kept beating them. It was so horrific to watch, the elephants just stood there and took it again and again. It has to stop! man is the cruelest most dangerous animal on the planet. Makes me so very sad.
