Good News! India Bans Import of Cosmetics Tested on Animals

Posted by 2 years ago | Permalink | Comments (117)

A huge victory for animals – the Indian government has just announced a ban on the import of animal-tested cosmetics!

Animal testing for cosmetics banned in India

This news comes after intensive efforts by PETA India, Union Minister Maneka Gandhi and others and will save millions of animals from being blinded, poisoned and killed in cruel and useless tests for products sold to India’s billion-plus population. The India Ministry of Health and Family Welfare made its decision public in The Gazette of India today and will implement the ban in November.

The compassionate move brings India up to speed with the European Union and Israel, which have already banned the sale and marketing of animal-tested cosmetics. Earlier this year, animal testing for cosmetics was banned in India. Now, companies that want to sell cosmetics in the country won’t be able to conduct cruel tests elsewhere, either.

Just last month, it looked like the existing ban on animal testing for cosmetics could be under threat from a group of international companies – including NIVEA, Johnson & Johnson and L’Oréal – which are members of the Indian Beauty & Hygiene Association. Thank you to everyone who wrote to these companies to help make sure that didn’t happen.

Congratulations to PETA India and everyone else who was involved in achieving this immense victory for animals. It’s a message to the whole world that India will not tolerate blinding bunnies for shampoo, mascara and other such products – and this ruling now gives an upper hand to businesses that use superior, human-relevant, non-animal testing methods.

I will never use any products from any of these companies or their sister companies because of their disgusting treatment of animals.. they may as well be using children.. just as unethical! I don’t hold animals superior or even equal to humans. The whole case for behaving decently to animals rests on the fact that we are the superior species. We are the species uniquely capable of imagination, rationality, and moral choice – and that is precisely why we are under an obligation to recognize and respect the rights of animals. Tolerance of Cruelty in any form is a degraded state of mind and soul. When we freely allow the massacre and prolonged torture of defenseless creatures, it increases our receptivity to human cruelty and war and steals our humanity, peace and soul. Very little speeds and greases your way to Hell

  • Jackie Rizer commented on October 15, 2014 at 3:34 pm

I’m thrilled to learn about this ban in India. If everyone watches the videos of the torture those defenseless and voiceless animals go through in testing labs, more people will demand cruelty free products. Those big companies only care about their bottom lines so if more people only buy cruelty free products maybe they will stop the cruel and unnecessary animal testings. There are many methods that are more reliable, humane and doesn’t involve the suffering of the animals. Animals don’t have voices. We need to be their voices. I’d like to share a few quotes. “Harm no living being. Your heart will be content. Your soul will be at peace.”
“All living beings deserve kindness and respect.” I hope someday we can all be cruelty free. When you save one animal it may not change the world but it’ll change his world. Thank you PETA for everything you do to save animals.
