Internet star Sprinkle of Glitter and her cat Zula are reminding their fans that “a cat is for life, not just for Christmas”.

Animals can require a commitment of 15 years or longer, and when given as gifts to unprepared recipients, they are often discarded when the novelty wears off. Sprinkle of Glitter explains:

Although most people who give animals as gifts have good intentions, it is unfair to give an animal to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that the person wants that particular animal and is able to give a lifetime of proper care and love. If in doubt, a plush toy makes a much better gift!

In the weeks following the holidays, already overwhelmed animal shelters are flooded with former “Christmas” cats and dogs who didn’t fit into someone’s lifestyle. Each of us can help work towards the day when there will be a loving, permanent home for every animal by having our animal companions spayed or neutered, always adopting and never buying animals from pet stores or breeders, and only taking on the responsibility of caring for animals when prepared for the lifelong commitment.
