Don’t turnip your nose – even if you think it’s a little corny – because we think these iconic British vegetarians look absolutely radishing. Lettuce explain exactly what we mean …

In celebration of World Vegetarian Day on 1 October, we teamed up with wildly talented food artist Prudence Staite to produce a set of celebrity portraits unlike any you’ve seen before. Made entirely out of vegetables, an image of Russell Brand features a new Brussels sprout hairdo, and Staite’s Paul McCartney sports a pretty high-end cabbage ensemble. Other unbeetable vegetarian celebs, including Morrissey, Ellie Goulding, Vivienne Westwood, Alan Cumming, Leona Lewis, John Bishop and Emeli Sandé, have also been rendered as food-based masterpieces.

When Emeli Sande became vegetarian she tweeted about her choice, saying, “Only once you think about it does eating meat become unthinkable.”

Joanna Lumley has been vegetarian since the 1970s. She credits her meat-free lifestyle to the lessons her mother taught her about respecting all animals. She has stated that she is much happier “not being a part of the blood chain.”

John Bishop stopped eating meat in 1985 after seeing a cow being slaughtered. He told an interviewer, “The cow was hanging up looking at me as if to say, ‘You did this'”.

Leona Lewis has been a vegetarian since she was 12 years old, and is a fierce anti-fur advocate. She even refused a £1 million contract with Harrods because the store refused to stop selling fur!

Famous activist and musician Morrissey became a vegetarian at the age of 11, and names his vegetarian and activist mother as his inspiration. Morrissey has never been one to miss an opportunity to speak out for animals. He often uses his tour to encourage fans to ditch meat by turning the venues he performed at vegetarian and by performing a show-stopping rendition of “Meat Is Murder”.

A longtime vegetarian advocate, Paul McCartney told PETA, “Many years ago, I was fishing, and as I was reeling in the poor fish, I realised, ‘I am killing him – all for the passing pleasure it brings me.’ And something inside me clicked. I realised as I watched him fight for breath that his life was as important to him as mine is to me”.

Vivienne chose to become a vegetarian when she realized just how damaging to the environment animal farming is. She’s stated, “By avoiding meat, you do more for the environment than recycling or driving a hybrid car combined. ”

Russel Brand has been a vegetarian since he was 14. He once mused, “I don’t see why someone should lose their live just so you can have a snack.”

Alan Cumming doesn’t eat meat due to his concern for the negative treatment of animals. He believes that the growing popularity of a vegan diet is a sign of how people are “becoming more conscious of what we do to our bodies.”

There is so mushroom for eating vegetarian, as today’s plant-based food options are endless and many of the biggest stars are choosing to follow strict vegan or vegetarian diets. It leaves us a little cressfallen that not everyone on the planet is vegetarian, but we figure today – World Vegetarian Day – is a pretty good opportunity to get to the root of the issue.

So please, do consider joining these cream-of-the-crop British icons in saving animals from lives of horror, lowering your carbon footprint and vastly improving your personal health.
