Why I Took the Stage During an Animal Experimenter’s Speech

PETA Protester at NIH SpeechMaternal deprivation experiments on baby monkeys are a textbook example of unethical psychological research, and they need to stop. Hundreds of infant monkeys are being torn away from their mothers, causing them to suffer from psychoses at a US National Institutes of Health (NIH) laboratory. So when Dr Stephen J Suomi, the head experimenter on baby monkeys at NIH, was to speak in Cardiff at the annual general meeting of the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ Faculty of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, I, along with another activist, decided to make my voice heard and interrupted his keynote speech.

Suomi is responsible for tormenting baby monkeys in disgustingly cruel and archaic experiments that cause them to experience severe anxiety, fear, pain and depression. Some of the monkeys bite at their own flesh and pull out their own hair. This was all revealed following the release of hours of video footage and hundreds of photographs and documents obtained by PETA US from NIH through a contested Freedom of Information Act request. After watching the video below, any compassionate person would wonder how Suomi can sleep at night.

We’re in the age of brain imaging and superior human-based research that allows us to study the causes and treatments of mental illness in humans without terrorising animals in traumatic experiments. Yet videos revealed that experimenters laughed while infant monkeys were being terrorised, screaming frantically and trying to escape and hide. This is not science – it’s violence.

We were escorted from the premises but not before we unfurled our posters and made sure that the conference attendees were aware of the cruelty that occurs in Suomi’s labs.

Will you join us in speaking out about this cruelty by signing PETA US’ action alert and sharing?

Well done! These animals trust and rely on us and people like this abuse that in the worst way possible and think that animals are their property to do with as they please.

These scientists will have children and pets that they care for and love. Why can’t they extend this compassion to these monkeys?

    Compassion should not be ring-fenced.

  • Jan Bishop commented on September 20, 2014 at 6:13 am

I was unable to watch the whole VT as I found it too shocking. This is barbaric, unnecessary and disgusting. All those taking part and allowing these experiments, are morally and ethically corrupt, and should not be allowed to continue in any form of animal experimentation.

  • Guillaume commented on September 20, 2014 at 10:59 am

ok. Perhaps there s a better way here.

    1) these experiments
    Need to be lawful

    2) in order
    To be lawful they need
To abide by law and regulation

    3) in order to abide, they need
To be to be able to
A/ justify the science interest as well
    As regulatory protocol
B/ show that no alternatives are possible AND
    C/ animal rights laws.

    4) if A And B are
Not fulfilled than crimes or misdemeanours have been committed on account of C
    5) why don’t you look at this in detail and SUE these people ?

I think it would be much more effective and and be auch louder message to these people. PETA should think of better strategies and also about getting pro bon lawyers. Or even pay some in big cases.
PR stunts are sometimes good. But in this instance I’m not sure what’s been effectively achieved.

  • Mal Scott commented on September 20, 2014 at 11:11 am

This is barbaric, what are they trying to prove? Who is funding it? Is there no animal cruelty law that can be used to stop it? Who authorises it? I realise Peta must have asked these questions but why is this practice continuing?

  • Maaike commented on October 13, 2014 at 4:42 pm

I am shocked that someone with the good message is send away, while the instegators can continue their awfull business. I mean…who is right for god ‘s sake!

  • Pamela Preedy commented on October 14, 2014 at 11:23 am

Surely, all of these sickening experiments have already been carried out years ago in less enlightened times? I well remember pictures in a psychology book showing how a mother-deprived baby monkey had to choose between an uncomfortable wire “mother” with milk to drink and a padded furry comfortable “mother” to cling onto. The poor creature chose to spend most of its time with the comfort mother and visited the milk mother only when forced by hunger. The aftermath of mother-deprivation has also been studied in depth showing monkeys that were timid and bullied, or unsocialised and aggressive. THERE IS NO NEED FOR FURTHER EXPERIMENTS OF THIS KIND TO PROVE ANYTHING and even if there were, why should innocent creatures be tortured for the benefit of human beings? Humans are the most aggressive, destructive animals on this planet, willing to persecute every other life form to satisfy their greed, lust for blood and sense of superior entitlement. Those of us who have woken up and seen the truth need to shake the others awake.
