Trading Standards Warns Fortnum & Mason To Stop Misleading Customers Over Animal Welfare Claims

In response to a complaint we filed, Fortnum & Mason has been warned by Westminster Trading Standards that if it does not amend its corporate social responsibility policy or make it clear that the policy does not cover foie gras, it could be in breach of the Consumer Protection From Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 and face legal action!

The company disingenuously states that “animal welfare is very important to us” and claims that all its meat is of the highest welfare standard, complying with the “Five Freedoms” framework. In reality, birds used for foie gras are not granted a single one of the Five Freedoms, and foie gras production is so cruel that it is prohibited in Britain by the Welfare of Farmed Animals (England) Regulations 2007. The company further states that “[a]cross everything Fortnum & Mason is and does runs its English character”, while it sources from abroad a product deemed too cruel to produce in the UK.

In light of this development, Sir Roger Moore, PETA’s foie gras ambassador, said, “Fortnum & Mason has a choice – it can either highlight the fact that it is one of the last British department stores to sell a horribly cruel product, or it can finally pull foie gras from its shelves once and for all. If Fortnum & Mason wants to continue to trade on its ‘Britishness’ and high standards, it should adhere fully to British law and stop paying French farmers to force-feed geese for foie gras”.

In addition to Sir Roger, other high-profile supporters of our campaign to rid Fortnum & Mason of foie gras include Dame Vera Lynn, Twiggy, Jenny Seagrove and much-loved twitcher Bill Oddie.

    Fortnum & Mason must let the public know the vile and disgusting method of how these geese are tortured by having pipes forced down their throat and are forced fed, this is the the most cruel practice to ever have been visited on a animal. Fortnum & Mason are suffering from a serious delusion if they think that foie gras is within the guidlines of animal welfare. They don’t want to deal with the reality of this issue, they’d rather look away and pretend that this cruelty doesn’t exist or even worse they don’t care. All animals have a right to live their lives the way they want to, we have no right to treat these geese and ducks like this. Fortnum & Mason will probably say we don’t actually do this to the geese and duck its the farmers, we’re just selling it. What I would say in return, is that if no one sold foie gras then their would be no need for the foie gras farms, Fortnum & Mason are profiting from the cruelty of animals, an animals life is more important than money. We as a species have evolved an ethical system that should protect all species from harm and suffering, we cant ever forget that ethics is what delines humanity.

      We as a species? We are not a species. We are may species of similaar appearnace. Some have evolved and some remain barbarians.

    There is no such thing as humane meat. The Human race is utterly bereft of ethics in reference to the treatment of animals which is hellish !

    Isn’t it time for celebrity chefs to stop using foie gras in their cookery programmes and to explain why to the viewers? Perhaps this would help to alert more people to the cruelty behind this product.

    Hunt down as many adverts in glossy mags.and journals and complain to companies selling foie gras. I’m sure PETA ,Viiva and others would like to know who they are.

    Well done and thank you to Peta courageous and zealous actions all over the world. Welfare Farm Animal Regulation such as exists in England alas doesnot exists in France where we badly need it. Respect for animals seems to be a forgotten concept since after world war two capitalism has crept into our life making it worse for animals. Foie gras must be definitly banished…”With the help of our friends ?” Would Peta board consider giving a hand or step in the french arena ? Before Xms a Tv broacast alerted french viewers about the abnormal and monstrous reality of foie gras “production”. Thus said mentality are slow to change especially in a country where
    culinary tradition is a all must with a international prestige. Ways must be found to
    manage “la chèvre et le chou” in terms of french pride where animals have no place. French association “One Voice” seems to encounter lots of ghastly pressures
    and harassment. Would coopération be an open possibility ? That is if ” l’esprit de clocher ” is urgently put aside. Again thank you to all PETA
