Update on new animal experiments law

Last week, the government sent PETA its proposed new law on animal experiments – the one resulting from the long, long process of translating the 2010 EU directive passed into UK law. Parliament will only be permitted to rubber stamp the draft regulations so we can expect very few changes before the new law comes into force at the start of 2013.

PETA – and our fantastic supporters – have been working for nearly two years to ensure that implementing the directive wouldn’t lead to the standards of protection for animals in UK laboratories getting even worse. We reported a few months ago that the government seemed to have responded to our arguments and public concern by keeping higher UK standards where they already existed and the detailed draft law we’ve now seen confirms that. Among the things we fought for that are in the law are:

  •  retaining special protection for cats and dogs;
  • a full ban on the use of Great Apes has been introduced to the law for the first time;
  • there will be no exceptions to the ban on experiments that “cause the animal severe pain, suffering or distress that is likely to be long-lasting and cannot be ameliorated”;
  • while not yet confirmed, it looks as though cage sizes will not be reduced.

While we’re relieved that things haven’t worsened – which they may well have without our efforts and your support – sadly we essentially have the same law that has allowed animal tests to creep up to over 10,000 a day, and which keeps so much about animal experiments hidden from the public.

The government however is now considering whether to abolish a secrecy clause in the law that keeps much of what happens in laboratories hidden from view. Please contact them to demand that the public is given the right to know what is done in its name.

Successes on the air transport of monkeys and the breeding of dogs for experiments show that we can save animals from suffering in laboratories, and with your continued and amazing support, we will.

    Stop animal testing

    Successive governments gave the EU greater and greater powers, and allowed extremists into this country, all without the permission of the people; do you really think it will meaningfully respond to your concerns?

    Animal vivisection is an abomination and it’s high time to only test on human tissues and to release all the animals and give them liberation.

    Gerry dorrian..the EU is a godsend for all animals. I think that a facist like you does much more harm to this world then the EU

    I’mworried that a lot of peoplebelieve that animaltesting is kept to a bare minimum and under strict conditions. I wrote to Lynne Featherstone and other MPs with my concerns over the reduction in inspections and regulations due to cost cutting and new laws and the ‘Sae the Harlan Beagle’ campaign which has its own website and lists the brutal conditions for breeding beagles.

    As the conditions did not seem to find any disfavour despite evidence being available on the internet of the atrocious conditions,people could believe it is all above board.

    Testing drugs on animals will continue as long as it suits the drug industry.
    Profit from Pain goes like this.
    Governments say they have to test on animals before they can test on people ( clinical trials )
    This benifits the drug industry in 3 ways.
    1. 80% of clinical trials fail so the cure is a long way off and they can go on treating the problem.
    2 it cost millions and years of testing so no one can put a new drug on the market without going through the animal testing route and only the big drug companies can afford that.
    3 When a new drug finally gets to the market it has cost many millions to develop so the normal profit margin on costs will look ok but the actual net profit will be huge. All the failed drug costs get added to the few succsesful ones. One cancer drug can cost up to 30k a year for the NHS for 1 person.

    How many drugs have failed the animal tests that would have been perfect for humans ?

    Although Britain has proclaimed it will not permit the use of stray cats and dogs in experiments, Germany is proposing to sent catchers around city streets to catch feral cats and “rehouse” them. Where are they going to put them all? It seems like an excuse to sell them to laboratories. Don’t forget the new EU directive allows the use of strays for experiments. EU countries such as Romania with a huge stray dog population could see this as a way of solving the problem.

    There is no need for animal testing. It has been proven for years with shops like the Body Shop that testing on animals is not necessary in providing safe products to the public. Testing on animals is evil and inhumane. Anyone who tests on animals has no regard for life on earth.

    How many animals were tested and died for drug Clonazepam.
    I was given this garbage by ,,mistake,, , . I suffer absolutelly horrible for 6 years and two years tapering , had seizures , shakes , you cannot imagine horror I lived .
    Now , when is over , I know how much animals suffer , death is the best what can be done to animals in labs .
    My point is , if Clonazepam was also tested on animals , like milion other terrible drugs , why I suffer hell on Earth for 6 years side effects .
    Why I was not told about terrible deadly side effects ? They tested on animals , why they {idiots , killers in labs ] dont’ know about side effects.
    They tortured milions animals for drugs , but animal cannot tell you , he or she is depressed , horrible nausea , inner tremor , shakes , pannic attacks and more and more .
    Now after what I went tru , I know animal testing is only money making , job created , animal torture , abuse with government support , absolutely bo…….., .
    No one reason tested on animals , no one . All is just money bol……

    We all need to rescue the Beagles of Harlan & get the 2 laboratories closed down forever & I would hope Peta would help with this especially as they breed them for other countries to experiment on & kill they do their own horrific experiments at one site at the other site the beagles are used for their blood,then they kill them well they could use human blood donors & the other site they do horrendous experiments where they take a puppy away from mother & siblings & they either don’t come back cos they’ve killed it or itl come back blind or deaf or cutopen & stiched up in total pain & terrified they spend their short lives in cages never stroked or gone outside till theyrin a binbag dead yet it need not happen ,animals don’t need to be used anymore so free the beagles & peta please help us
