Vegan Joan Jett’s Life Story Hits Cinema Screens

There’s a lot to love about Joan Jett! It’s not just the fact that her music is amazing or that she’s led a legendary rock-and-roll life, which is now the subject of a major film, The Runaways, starring Twilight’s Kristen Stewart. Nope, the coolest thing about this iconic frontwoman is that she’s been a vegetarian for 20-plus years and that she never misses an opportunity to tell others why she refuses to eat meat and why they should too!

A big PETA US supporter who has starred in a vegetarian testimonial for the group, Joan recently took to the streets of Manhattan to hand out vegetarian/vegan starter kits (get PETA UK’s starter kit here) to New Yorkers.

“If there’s anything I love more than rock and roll, it’s animals”, says Jett. “And when I learned how animals on factory farms are treated, I gave beef the boot and stopped eating pigs, chickens and fish too. Cutting meat out of your diet is the best thing you can do for animals and your own health.”

The Runaways opens on 10 September in the UK.

I have been vegan for 9 mo now and I will be rocking it for life!
I missed your free concert in Louisville KY because I had to have surgery, that made me extremely sad, but I know you are out there doing your thing in support for all the animals.
My five yr old Avery is in love with your music & your Barbie doll.
She carries it around singing I LOVE ROCK N ROLL!
I told her you don’t eat animals like mommy and she thought that was a nice thing to do.
Just want you to know you are helping out new & future generations of compassionate people by your example.
    Blessings to you Joan,
    Sara Goodall

    Hey Joan,

I have been Vegan Sice NYE 2010 and vegitarian before that.
I took my 9 yr old daughter to see you in Jupiter Fl at the dog wash for her 1st concert. She watched you wide eyed and mouthed the whole show. Afterward she begged me for a guitar and lessons for months till she got it. She is a HUGE fan of your (as am I) and of what your doing. She has spread the word at school about why she brings tofurkey sandwiches and how it is mean to eat animals. Her teacher even gave a small assignment on factory farms in a little kids reader.
I hope you realize what a HUGE impact you have had far beyond just what you can see.
How many nine year olds know every JJ song (exept “fetish”)? What an impact you have had.

Years ago I was a vegetarian. Over the years I played with the idea and often wen without eating meat, but then 5 months ago after reading the Kind Diet, I decided to give up meat for good. I am so happy that so many or our roll models are also deciding to become vegan or vegetarian. Hopefully one day there will be so many of us that it will have a huge impact on the meat producers and on society as a whole. It’s when people in the media take up something that it becomes what is cool or acceptable and it’s so nice that so many of those in the media have decided to take on this cause.
