The PETA Research and Education Foundation (PREF), a registered UK charity (number 1056453), focuses on developing and distributing unique research and education materials.

In 2005, PREF attended seven education shows in cities throughout the United Kingdom, distributing approximately 8,000 free education packs that contain lesson plans, activities, videos and other resources for teaching children empathy for animals. Additionally, more than 10,000 packs were sent through various other distribution programmes in the United Kingdom and overseas.

PREF’s specially developed teaching kit for secondary schools was sent to 650 teachers across Great Britain on a trial basis. The kit educates students about animal protection issues, helping them to analyse the way humans dominate other species and to consider alternative ways of regarding animals. The kits met with an enthusiastic reception!

PREF also urges prosecutors, law enforcement officers and judges to consider animal-abuse cases with the seriousness they deserve, warning them that violent acts towards animals have long been recognised as an indicator of a dangerous psychopathy that does not confine itself to animal victims. In 2005, PREF sent information packs to every Crown Prosecution office, criminal court and probation office and young offender institution and prison as well as to 1,600 police stations and 500 social-care providers, explaining the link between cruelty to animals and violence towards human beings.

We also launched our new Web site, PETAREF.org.uk, with a schedule of education conferences at which PREF will be exhibiting information on the connection between cruelty to animals and violence towards people. The site also features links for ordering free educational materials and is a wonderful resource for educators.
