Call for a Cease-Fire for Bears
PETA is calling on HRH Queen Elizabeth and the Ministry of Defence to stop using bear pelts to make headpieces for the five Guards Regiments and start having the hats fashioned from luxurious faux fur instead.
These bears' slaughter may only produce three Grenadier Guards' hats.
These bears' slaughter may only produce three Grenadier Guards' hats.

Bears are cruelly killed for their hides - either shot during a hunt or ensnared, possibly for days, in cruel traps. During hunts, as many as one bear in seven is not killed immediately when shot and some escape wounded, possibly dying later from blood loss or starvation. In some Canadian provinces, there are no restrictions on the shooting of mothers with nursing cubs, leading to the slaughter of entire families during hunts.

PETA has worked with a leading faux fur manufacturer to produce a faux fur sample for the ministry. This material has now been made into two hats which are undergoing trials. While this is encouraging, the Ministry of Defence has told us that the trial period may last years!

Instead of financially supporting shameful slaughter, Great Britain should set a compassionate example and switch to a humane and progressive alternative and commit to an end to the killing.

Please write a polite letter requesting a reply and urging the Queen to call on the Ministry of Defence to immediately stop killing bears while they work on replacing the real fur used for the Guards' hats with a cruelty-free faux fur:
