There’s nothing regal about cruelty, and Lucy Davis is out to prove it. Clutching a cute teddy bear to her body — and nothing else — the former star of The Office took time out of her busy schedule to pose naked for a sexy new PETA ad condemning the killing of Canadian black bears in order to make caps for the Queen’s Guards.
“So much money is spent, and so much cruelty is spent on what at the end of the day is a hat — and that is it”, says Davis.
It can take the entire hide of one bear to make just one guard’s headpiece. Many of the bears are shot several times before they die, and some escape the hunters and bleed to death. When mother bears are killed, orphaned cubs are left behind to starve.
“Not only was I horrified to find that it was one bear to make one hat, but also that it’s not really just one bear — in a way, it can be one whole family”, says Davis. “That whole family dies, and again, it’s just for a hat.”
Davis is the latest in a long list of celebrities who have condemned the slaughter of black bears for ceremonial headpieces, including Pamela Anderson, Sadie Frost, Mary McCartney, Twiggy, Julian Clary, Roger Moore, Jilly Cooper and Amanda Holden.
