You Can Be a Humanitarian Too – Take Action in PETA's Urgent Alerts Now! What do you get when you mix a hot host like Pamela Anderson with a cool designer like Stella McCartney? One heck of a PETA party! On 28 June 2006, myriad compassionate stars showed up to party with PETA at Stella's boutique in Mayfair, London.
Pamela then joined PETA Europe Managing Director Ingrid Newkirk and PETA US Vice President Dan Mathews to give Humanitarian Awards to some of the latest movers and shakers to support the campaigns of PETA affiliates worldwide against cruelty to animals. Sweeping the super-siblings category, Stella – who narrated this undercover fur-farm investigation – was given an award for her "kick-ass" contribution to animal-friendly fashion, while her sister Mary McCartney, who shot provocative PETA US anti-fur ads featuring singer Sophie Ellis Bextor and rocker Tommy Lee, was honoured for devoting her time and considerable talent to animal rights. Actor Gillian Anderson – known to legions of adoring fans for her starring role in The X-Files as well as for her critically acclaimed role in the BBC's Bleak House – went home with a Humanitarian Award for putting the truth out there about cruelty to animals in Covance's laboratories and at the Lincoln Park Zoo. Compassionate rocker Chrissie Hynde was recognised for her lifelong bravery in attacking cruelty to animals, which has included protests against KFC, Indian leather production and the wool industry. Tennis legend Martina Navratilova was awarded for her ongoing commitment to helping PETA fight against cruelty to animals, and James Bond himself, Sir Roger Moore, was given an award for narrating our exposé of the cruelty behind foie gras production, which was used to pass landmark legislation banning foie gras in California. Although he couldn't be there in person, Sir Roger sent his thanks via a pre-recorded video, saying, "I tell every chef in every restaurant that I go to that foie gras should not be on the menu". PETA also honoured High Street retailer Topshop for its "All Our Fur Is Fake" policy and Cosmopolitan magazine for its "Smart Girls Fake It" fur-free policy. To end the packed evening affair, Pamela was joined by a bevy of babes from London's top model agencies; they took over the windows of Stella's shop to recreate PETA's iconic "We'd Rather Bare Skin Than Wear Skin" ad campaign. Stripped down to their sexy skivvies, the nude models waved to the crowd with their fur-free message. Other party-goers, including Sadie Frost, Louise Redknapp, Steve Jones and Jeff Beck, enjoyed drinks provided by The Organic Spirits Co and tucked into delicious vegan food. A big thank-you to Jamm Print & Production, one of PETA's Business Friends, which supplied printing materials free of charge for the evening. PETA's London Party Photo Gallery |
