London – Chris Martin is poised to become the “apple” of PETA’s eye – he has just taken an early lead in PETA’s annual “Sexiest Vegetarian” online poll. His closest competitors are Josh Hartnett, Morrissey and Tobey Maguire.

Country crooner Carrie Underwood, winner in the most-watched American Idol finale ever, is the frontrunner among “sexiest veg” women. She wore a “V is for Vegetarian” T-shirt on the show, which sent her popularity soaring among animal lovers everywhere. Carrie’s closest challengers include Stella McCartney, Gwyneth Paltrow and Avril Lavigne

The poll will be online at PETA.org.uk through June, with winners announced in July.

Chris Martin and wife Paltrow are known for their love of vegan cuisine, and they made international headlines recently when they gave daughter Apple a vegan birthday cake from Moby’s New York eatery “teany”.

Brooding pop genius Morrissey, who launched a generation of vegetarians with his iconic song “Meat Is Murder”, has said, “Nobody can come up with a good argument for eating animals, nobody can. People, as some kind of a joke, say, ‘well, it’s tasty.’ But it’s only tasty once you garnish it and you put salt and pepper and you cook it and you have to do 300 things to it to disguise its true taste. If you put garnishes on a chair or fabric it would probably taste quite nice”.
