Belfast – Wearing a minidress made entirely of lettuce leaves, Nicola Ward, a finalist in PETA’s 2011 Sexiest European Vegetarian contest, and her beau, Belfast Giants star goalie Stephen Murphy – who was decked out in a lettuce-leaf suit – asked Thursday’s lunch crowd to “Go Green, Go Vegan” in the run-up to St Patrick’s Day. The flashy vegan couple, from Dundee, pointed out that going vegan is the best way to help animals and the planet.

In addition to causing animal suffering on a massive scale, the meat industry is one of the top causes of water pollution, soil erosion, water use, climate change and most other environmental problems, according to UN scientists. The pollution and inefficiencies of meat production are depleting and fouling our arable land, potable water and clean air.

“I make my living blocking shots, but no one needs saturated fat and cholesterol from meat and dairy products blocking their arteries”, said Murphy, who won the Elite Ice Hockey League’s British Player of the Year Award for the 2010-2011 season and was named the Giants’ Most Valuable Player. “The best thing that anyone can do for animals, the planet and their own health – on Paddy’s Day or any time of year – is to make the switch to a vegan diet”, added Ward.
