COULD EVERYONE ON THIS CROYDON LANE GET FREE LUXURY BEDDING?

PETA Asks Mayor to Change ‘Featherbed Lane’ to ‘Feather-Free-Bed Lane’

Croydon, Greater London – Today, PETA has sent an unusual proposal for Mayor of Croydon, Wayne Trakas-Lawlor, to take a gander at: if the Mayor changes the name of a lane in the Forestdale neighbourhood from “Featherbed Lane” to “Feather-Free-Bed Lane”, PETA will deck out the bedrooms of every resident on the lane with sumptuous, fluffy, feather-free duvets. The action follows a new PETA exposé of goose farms in China – where 80 per cent of all down is sourced – that shows birds being painfully live-plucked.

In its proposal, PETA points out that accepting the offer would put Croydon in the spotlight while promoting cruelty-free living among residents, who would be able to sleep soundly at night knowing no bird was tormented to stuff their duvets.

“Multiple PETA exposés have revealed that down bedding means live, struggling birds are pinned down and have their feathers violently ripped out”, says PETA Director Elisa Allen. “With interest in vegan living at an all-time high, now is the perfect time to change this Croydon  street’s name to signify that a good night’s sleep for us doesn’t have to be a nightmare for ducks and geese.”

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to wear” – has documented that workers pin geese down and tear their feathers out as the birds thrash and scream. The terrified animals are often plucked so hard that their skin is torn open, and hurried workers sew up the wounds without giving the geese any painkillers. Many birds endure this torture multiple times before being slaughtered far short of their natural life span. In addition, some down is sourced from foie gras farms, where ducks and geese have tubes rammed down their throats in order to pump corn mush into their stomachs until their livers swell to about 10 times their normal size.

Cruelty-free bedding is durable, machine washable, and more cost effective. Synthetic materials are also allergen-free because they don’t collect dust, mould, bacteria, and odours as down does.
