Vatican City – PETA Germany and its affiliates kicked off their international tour of Roman Catholic institutions last week by distributing leaflets outside the Vatican. The leaflets feature an image of the Pope holding a condom and read, “Dogs & Cats Can’t Use Condoms. We Are in the Midst of an Unholy Animal Overpopulation Crisis. Spay or Neuter Today”. The demonstration came on the heels of the Pope’s statement that the use of condoms may be acceptable in some cases. But, as PETA UK points out, condoms won’t help the millions of dogs and cats who are homeless because of the animal overpopulation crisis.

“If animals could wear condoms, a tremendous amount of suffering would be prevented”, says PETA UK’s Mimi Bekhechi. “But they can’t – so it’s up to their guardians to take responsibility for spaying and neutering.”

Millions of unwanted cats and dogs enter animal shelters every year in Europe, and many are euthanised because there simply aren’t enough good homes for them. Hundreds of thousands more never make it to an animal shelter and are left to fend for themselves on the streets, where they often suffer from starvation, disease or injuries; are subjected to cruelty; or are struck by cars. The solution is simple: always spay or neuter your animal companions. Spaying one dog or cat can save thousands of lives in just a few short years.
