This morning, just in time for World Health Day, PETA sent a letter to Darren Hurrell, chief executive of the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust, offering to pay to place a sexy pro-vegan ad on the side of the trust’s ambulances. PETA’s offer comes in the wake of reports that the ambulance service has been one of many across the UK to buy expensive new equipment, including lifting gear and wider stretchers, in order to accommodate larger patients. The advert features a nurse whose image would help revive anyone who is feeling under the weather and reads, “Lighten Your Load – Go Vegan. Vegans are, on average, slimmer and healthier than meat eaters”. In its letter, PETA points out that vegans are more likely to be healthy than people who consume meat and dairy products and that a pure vegetarian or vegan diet can be a safe way to take off excess weight.

“Our proposal is a win-win situation: potential patients will get the point that a vegan diet is better for their health, and the North West’s ambulance services will avoid the additional financial strain of providing equipment for bigger patients”, says PETA Special Projects Coordinator Abi Izzard. “The best thing that anyone can do to keep the ambulance at bay and help animals is to go vegan.”

PETA’s letter to Darren Hurrell follows.

Dear Mr Hurrell,

On behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), I am writing regarding the costs the ambulance service has incurred in order to better accommodate obese patients. We understand that this is a heavy burden for you to bear, which is why we’re interested in paying to place a pro-vegan ad on the side of your ambulances. The eye-catching ad we’ve designed features a sexy nurse and reads, “Lighten Your Load – Go Vegan. Vegans are, on average, slimmer and healthier than meat eaters”. A mock-up of the artwork for the ad is attached. Our ad would help bolster your budget while informing people that going vegan is the best way to reduce their trouser size, risks to their health and wear and tear on emergency vehicles.

Overwhelming scientific evidence shows that vegans are far less likely to be overweight than meat-eaters are and far more likely to be in better overall health. The American Dietetic Association – the largest group of nutrition professionals in the US – reviewed hundreds of studies and concluded that compared to people who consume meat, vegetarians have lower rates of obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer.

In addition, every person who goes vegan saves more than 100 animals a year from the cruelty of factory farming and slaughter – including sparing piglets from having the tips of their teeth and their tails cut off without any pain relief and sparing animals the terror of having their throats cut at slaughter.

We hope you will consider placing our ad on your ambulances. If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Abi Izzard
