London – Formula 1 heiress and TV star Tamara Ecclsestone is sure to receive a wide range of gifts in celebration of her marriage to powerbroker Jay Rutland, but PETA thinks it may have found the most creative gift for the happy couple: a goose rescued from the French foie gras farm that supplies Fortnum & Mason with foie gras. The animal rights group is naming the goose – who now enjoys frolicking in the sun and idling on the pond of a French animal sanctuary – Tamara, in honour of Ecclestone, who has starred in a PETA advert against foie gras and personally convinced Formula One events to stop serving the vile food product. A photo of Tamara the rescued goose is available here.

Two male geese who were rescued at the same time as Tamara have been named Sir Roger – in honour of Sir Roger Moore, the narrator of PETA’s video exposé of foie gras farms – and Prince Charles, in honour of the Prince of Wales, who refuses to serve foie gras at Royal events.

“Tamara has worked hard to save geese such as Sir Roger and Prince Charles from the cruelty of foie gras farms, and now the joy of her wedding will be shared with the joy of freedom that these geese now experience every day”, says PETA Associate Director Mimi Bekhechi. “PETA wishes Tamara all the happiness that a kind-hearted, determined advocate for animals deserves.”

Ecclestone and Moore are part of a long list of celebrities – including Twiggy, Ricky Gervais, Kate Winslet and Pamela Anderson – who have taken a stand against the sale of foie gras, which is illegal to produce in the UK. Ducks and geese who are used in foie gras production have pipes shoved down their throats several times a day to force painfully large amounts of food into their stomachs, eventually causing their livers to swell to up to 10 times their normal size.

In addition to her efforts to stop foie gras sales, Ecclestone has teamed up with PETA to speak out against fur and to encourage everyone to “Be an Angel for Animals” and practice compassion for dogs and cats.
