Mexico City Moves to End Bullfighting

Mexico City, once home to the world’s largest bullring, is on the verge of making history by banning the torture of bulls in bullfights!

The bill submitted by Mexico City’s mayor doesn’t explicitly outlaw bullfights but makes holding them virtually impossible. This strategy mirrors Bogotá, Colombia, where similar restrictions led to an effective ban.

This move wouldn’t have happened without the relentless work of PETA Latino and the Mexico Sin Toreo coalition, along with thousands of animal rights advocates. Thank you to everyone who spoke out against bullfighting in Mexico.

What Is Bullfighting?

Bullfighting is a prolonged execution. Bulls, who are naturally peaceful and social, are tormented in the arena. Assailants on horseback stab them with lances before other bullfighters plunge sharp banderillas into their backs.

As they weaken from blood loss, they are taunted and stabbed with a sword – then their spinal cord is severed with a knife. Many are still conscious as their ears or tails are hacked off as “trophies” before their bodies are dragged from the arena.

Tens of thousands of bulls suffer this fate every year in bullfighting festivals across the world. But Mexico City is proving that we can break the cycle of cruelty.

What You Can Do

The news comes almost a year after Columbia passed a law banning bullfighting. Now, all eyes are on other countries with bullfighting industries, such as Spain, to follow suit.

Please sign PETA’s petition urging Spain’s prime minister to implement a similar ban:
