PETA “Chicken” Protests Popeyes Restaurant Opening in Edinburgh

A bruised and bandaged PETA “chicken” confronted customers at the opening of a new Popeyes restaurant in Edinburgh to remind would-be diners of the suffering behind every deep-fried chicken sandwich. Holding a sign reading “Don’t Batter Me! Go Vegan” the feathered mascot urged everyone to leave birds in peace – not pieces – by going vegan.

Every chicken is an individual who feels love, joy, pain, and fear. Gentle chickens don’t want to die for a Popeyes takeaway any more than humans would, and we can all give birds a break by leaving them off our plates.

Chickens Deserve to Live

Unfortunately, most humans know more about how chickens taste than who they are. Chickens can distinguish between more than 100 faces of their own species, have full-colour vision, and experience rapid eye movement sleep, which means they dream just like we do. They love to play and will run, jump, and even sunbathe when given the chance.

A Lifetime of Abuse

Chickens bred for meat, or “broiler chickens,” are among the most abused animals on the planet. They are crammed into severely crowded, filthy sheds and forced to grow such unnaturally large upper bodies that their legs often become crippled under the weight. At abattoirs, chickens’ throats are often cut while they’re still conscious, and many are scalded to death in de-feathering tanks.

Stop Eating Birds

The best thing you can do for chickens is to leave birds and all other animals off your plate. Take our vegan pledge: try vegan for 30 days, and we’ll support you with recipes, meal plans, tips, and more:
