As a new government is in place, PETA is encouraging the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to stop purchasing caps made from the skin of slaughtered bears for the King’s Guard.

Our new ad, which is plastered across bus shelters around Windsor, features Simon Pegg showing off a state-of-the-art faux fur and urging the MoD to switch to the superior fabric. The image was shot by renowned photographer Rankin.

King’s Guard Caps Support Cruelty to Bears

A PETA video exposé released earlier this year revealed that bears in Canada – whose fur may be used to make the caps – are baited with food before they’re shot with high-powered crossbows, disembowelled, and dismembered by hunters. Many endure a slow, painful death.

It takes the skin of at least one bear to make a single cap.

Faux Fur Is Available

Created together with leading faux furrier ECOPEL, the luxurious bespoke material is bear-free yet looks identical to the bearskin used for the caps. It meets each of the MoD’s requirements for a faux fur, and in some areas, it outperforms bear fur: it is lighter, dries faster, and is more sustainable.

Taxpayers’ Money

Do you know how much a single bearskin cap worn by the King’s Guard costs the UK taxpayer? According to records recently obtained by PETA, the price of the caps purchased by the MoD has increased by over 30% – each now costs a whopping £2,040.

ECOPEL has offered the luxury faux fur for free for 10 years and promised that it will always be cheaper than bear fur. The offer has been on the table for the past eight years, during which time over 500 bears have been slaughtered for caps purchased by the MoD.

Will the Labour Party Spare Bears?

Prior to being elected, the Labour Party made a commitment to conducting an immediate review of the suitable non-animal alternatives to bearskin by assessing contracts and costs. Now that the party is in government, PETA is holding it to its promise. We’re hopeful that the MoD will finally make the switch to a humane and indistinguishable faux bear fur – something the public wants and bears need.

Urge the MoD to Go Fur-Free

Please encourage the secretary of state for defence to make the caps fur-free:
