Cheers to “Go-VEGAN-Jo”, The “Dairy-Free Milkshake Man”: PETA Sends Vegan Shakes to Australian Eurovision Pick
Sydney—As Australian Eurovision hopeful Go-Jo (AKA Marty Zambotto) prepares to “shake up” the song contest’s semi-final, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, PETA, has sent the quirky artist a hamper of vegan milkshakes urging the artist to “Go-VEGAN-Jo.”

In a letter accompanying the gift, PETA notes that, as the nation’s selected star, Go-Jo also has a chance to become a winner for animals as a Dairy-free “Milkshake Man”.
“An Aussie Eurovision winner is music to our ears, but Go-Vegan-Jo has a nice ring, too,” says Senior Campaigns Advisor Mimi Bekhechi. “Cows aren’t milk machines, but clever, social individuals. We’re hoping our gift sparks something in Go-Jo, inspiring him to be a champion for animals too”.
Born into a cycle of abuse, cows used for dairy are repeatedly, forcibly impregnated to keep them making milk. Mother’s milk is specifically designed to nourish calves and create bonding opportunities for them and their mum, just like human babies, but cows on dairy farms never get this chance. Within days of their birth, calves in the dairy industry are removed: males are usually slaughtered for veal, while the females follow in their mother’s grim footsteps. Mother cows bellow in anguish for days after their babies are taken, and many have been filmed desperately running alongside the trucks whisking their babies away. They also often suffer from a myriad of health issues linked to excess milk production. At just four years old, they’re are trucked to the abattoir where their throats are slit.
Aside from the cruelty, dairy damages the environment, swallowing up enormous amounts of water and generating methane, a potent, climate-warming greenhouse gas. Deforestation for grazing land is also responsible for habitat loss for many Australian native animals, including the now-endangered koala.
PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat,” opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org.au and follow PETA on Facebook and Instagram.
