VICTORY: Barbaric ‘Toro de la Vega’ Bull Stabbing Festival Finally Banned!

Posted by 3 months ago | Permalink | Comments (213)

We’ve just received some wonderful news – a horrific annual “festival” in which men on foot and horseback pursue and stab a terrified young bull to death, has just effectively been banned by the regional government in Spain.

The Toro de la Vega “festival” has, until now, taken place every September in the autonomic region of Castilla y Léon, Spain. The event entails chasing a young bull through the streets of Tordesillas and stabbing him with darts and spears until he is bleeding and crippled. His tail is cut off while he’s still alive. When he dies of his injuries, the person who ultimately killed him is awarded a ceremonial spear and a medal by the city council.

Toro de la Vega still

Compassionate people, including tens of thousands of PETA supporters as well as local Spanish groups such as PACMA, have been protesting against this cruelty for years. Now our efforts have finally paid off! Thank you to everyone who has taken part in our actions or otherwise spoken out against this cruelty.

This victory is part of a wider movement in Spain, as more and more people are turning against events such as bullfighting and bull runs. To date, more than 100 towns have banned these events. The tide is turning against barbaric so-called “traditions” – and with your help, we’ll keep on fighting until no more animals suffer slow and painful deaths in the name of entertainment.

Thank you Peta – you are an amazing organisation and thanks to all the thousands of people who bothered to take the time to sign and share the petitions. Stand together and good will take over evil….

PETA: This is great news indeed.
However, I just read this comment on another page: “Unfortunately it was not banned. The governor informed they decided that the bull would not be killed at the end of the struggle, but he can be hurt all the festival long. It was just a political act, not a fair decision.” Is there any way PETA could check this out please?
Thank you PETA for all the good you do for the animals all over the world.

I’m sorry but this absolutely worse! From the Spanish papers, it was not banned, they will not kill the bull, so does this mean they will leave the bull there to die? It was not banned!

i am happy now. i see all the hours of signing hunderts of petitions is a victory.
it is one petition but i see how many torros are safed of this cruel and absolutely stapping in that Festival.for the future thank you for this..
what is a festival when someone get hurt is the only cause . no animal and no human or child or women or man should get hurt in any festival.
this victory made my day and i am so happy . specially for the toros. they are safe now. i will continue with signing all petitions where animals are abused . also enviromentel abuse and humans rights.

i hope china and south korea will be able to give up the tourchere of millions of dogs and cats and fur farm animals. common China.. common south Korea. common Vietnam. common asia. make us happy and show the world that you all truly are from the new age century of 2016. thank you !

Has this been confirmed or is Denise’s comment right that it has not been completely banned and just spared death at the end??? Denise, where did you see your article?

      • Elena Damien commented on June 10, 2016 at 2:08 pm

If this is true, that they won’t kill the bull at the end, it is definitely worse. The bull die eventually after suffering for horrific hours. Please PETA check on this. Thank you.

Spain and it’s horrific culture of animal abuse needs to come into the 21st century with compassion and enlightened thinking for the innocent animals of all shapes and sizes.

Glad to see this barbaric ‘macho’ practice is being banned by enlightened councils in Spain. As far as the participants are concerned, they need to think about what they are doing and why they need to be part of this cruelty. There are better ways to display manhood, compassion and standing up for what is right for starters. Well done PETA and supporters.

  • Tyler commented on May 20, 2016 at 4:39 pm

GOOD! about time Spain got out of the dark ages and shed the idea that being cruel to animals is traditional/an art of anything other than what it is. A throwback. If you want throwback hands up who wants to go to the Valle de los Caidos and bring back El Caudillo? nadie? claro que no!

  • catherine commented on May 20, 2016 at 5:32 pm

Its encouraging to know that in some areas of Spain they do have the decency to support the need to stop animal cruelty. Years ago I supported the RSPCA in petitioning to prevent bullfighting taking place on our British soil and this was very successful. I find these so called ‘festivals’ barbaric beyond belief and for someone to be rewarded earning a medal from the Spanish council for stabbing a bull quite abhorrent and in poor taste. We progress in science and medicine and so many other areas and yet in this day and age we are still living in the dark ages when it comes to animal cruelty.
As long as this cruelty exists mankind can never be proud of its achievements.

  • Claudio commented on May 20, 2016 at 7:44 pm

This is not true. This is misinformation for your benefit. The only thing banned is the final killing in front of the people. The rest 95% of the cruelty show keeps the same and the bull might be killed out of the sight of people. And the Ayuntamiento de Tordesillas is presenting a request to eliminate this ban.

  • Stuart McRae commented on May 20, 2016 at 7:51 pm

Really good news to hear these latest success stories. Thank goodness for all the hardworking people who belong to Peta and other animal charities.
    Thank you.

  • Yvonne Amery commented on May 20, 2016 at 10:21 pm

Stabbing bulls is a degrading and completely inhumane torture. The people who do this, who watch it and who organise this barbaric torture cannot call themselves human. They are lower than nonhuman beings and should be ashamed of themselves totally. The entire country needs to examine its need for bloodthirsty sports and ban them everywhere.

Declare Spain one of the most cruel animal abusing countries in the world. Toro De La Vega is enough to make this so called festival a bloodbath of the disintegration of human decency. This is the decadence of a nation without values where not one elected official in Spain speaks for the bulls & the animals they slaughter in their barbaric festivals. No one stands up for the bull while the most hideous stabbing of the bull is taking place! This is how terrorists think & act without one iota of respect for the life of any animal. This is the barbarian psyche acting out their barbaric violence. I wish that the bull stabbers would get some kind of punitive actions against them! No one should spend money on Spain! Boycott this animal stabbing place until all of this mad violence against animals is eradicated!

Hello. I’m from Spain. I just wanted to say that, unfortunately, El Toro de la Vega hasn’t been banned. They just made a law that says the bull is not to be killed. That means that the barbarian people of Tordesillas will still sate their appetite by torturing the bull until it’s deadly wounded and dies because of it. Sorry for the dissappointment, but that’s how it is. Most Spanish politicians are still that coward.

Can anyone tell me why this has taken so long to be banned in a civilised country in the 21st century? And why bullfighting is still allowed in Spain, Mexico and France? I’m fed up with hearing rubbish about bullfighting being ‘culturally important’ in some countries. Hunting with dogs has been banned in the UK, and British culture has survived. it seems to me the only people regretting the loss of cruel ‘cultural’ traditions are those out of pocket through a ban!

  • Brenda commented on May 22, 2016 at 2:17 am

My heart breaks for the young bull showed in the picture. Think what this poor animal went through emotionally and physically? And why? How could these “men”, who look so full of hate and evil, do this to an innocent creature? What’s wrong with their way of thinking? It’s absolutely sickening.

  • Eva commented on May 22, 2016 at 3:28 pm

It would be lovely to think it has been banned, but it has not. It only has been banned to kill the bull in public. The festival will be held but away from the media and from activists. We are not sure yet in which way the people from Tordesillas are going to do this.
This is just a political strategy to manipulate media.
The new law to be approved can be seen at: http://www.ecestaticos.com/file/45efbca73916a79c59f7fd098ce397f4/1463658713.pdf
It does not say it has been banned.

  • MaiCa commented on May 22, 2016 at 3:56 pm

The Toro de la Vega has not been banned.
La Junta de Castilla y Leon has just decided that the animal will not be injured and killed in public.
This is clearly not a victory at this moment.

Spain and the Spanish -speaking world’s obsession with killing captive bulls is inconsistent with a civilized culture and an old-world excuse to kill for fun. How disgusting.

  • Mark commented on May 23, 2016 at 3:33 am

  • Patricia knull commented on May 23, 2016 at 4:56 am

Anyone using fur, eating eggs from chickens crammed into small areas, or products used on animals from companies to consumers should be forced to go there and watch what the animals go thru

  • Hana commented on May 23, 2016 at 10:09 am

I think that hurting animals so brutally and killing them without any legitimate reason such as self defense is just UNACCEPTABLE!!!!
To know weather something is humane or not, think about whether you would want it done to you and how you would feel if it was done to you!!!!
This festival has no meaning and no purpose but the disgusting pleasure of taking advantage of a helpless innocent animal and showing off your ability to slowly watch it die as it cries out in pain.
I AM GLAD IT WAS BANNED

Happy with the victories but still there are many fights for us. In my country – Brazil – government allows wild pigs hunting. They use heavy weapons to kill wild pigs, torture them and dogs are also killed in the hunting. Ibama, a government branch which should protect environment and animals, allowed the sauvage hunting: A shame to mankind. A shame for all living beings. Wild pigs needs help in Brazil.

Seeing the picture of a tormented and totally exhausted bull bleeding severely from deep wounds with a crowd of blood-thirsty humans mesmerized by this brutal and cruel scene makes me think of the Stone Ages and a blood-thirsty mob of cavemen. Where is the empathy that civilized people of the 21st century are supposed to have? I hope that eventually all the good people who have empathy for the living creatures of this world will be able to ban this bloody event everywhere. My heart goes out to all the tormented animals which are made to suffer by humans who have the sick mind to enjoy torturing a harmless and defenseless animal.

It is a concern of ours, it is a world concern whether it’s Spain or Timbuktu. Get real and leave us in peace if you’re just stirring, especially as I don’t know many Spaniards called ‘Bert’? De donde viene usted?

  • bert commented on May 25, 2016 at 12:20 pm

  • Catherine DESERT commented on May 25, 2016 at 4:43 pm

Why do you disseminate false information and do not you bring us today a formal denial to your ad, that the ” Toro de la Vega tournament ” would be ABOLISHED ? Which – for the moment – is perfectly WRONG !!!

Have you just carefully read the decree of the Board of Governors of Castile and Leon (Spanish text that some people, like me, took the time to translate into details) and that clearly explains that “in any popular bullfighting festival, where bulls are let loose and pursued by a crowd, these animals may no more be killed in the presence of the PUBLIC “(which inevitably and logically involves, they can always be killed in PRIVATE, out of sight of the animal rights activists, far from objectives of cameras and other forms of visual testimonies, that would be able to show the final horrific death of the bull)?
At no time, it is specified by the ordinance as “toro de la Vega tournament” was therefore abolished, instead, the spokesman of the government commission, Rosa Valdeón, still took care to add orally : “This decree does not prevent the holding of the celebration itself (the Toro de la Vega), because we want to respect the tradition, but prevents to kill the bull as before … (read: in PUBLIC! ) ”

All this doesn’t it appear you like a vast subterfuge, against the backdrop of great hypocrisy, and why is a site like yours relaying so this half-truth (even worse than the lie), which is so well , like said the old proverb, to ” sell the bearskin before killing him ?”
And it is, in this case, the skin of the “Tournament of Tordesillas”, that will well and truly continue to crack down (but hiding the DEATH to the largest number …)

    • Anne commented on June 23, 2016 at 1:26 pm

      Hi Catherine,

The information that we have received from local groups working on the ground in Spain is that the festival will not be going ahead this year due to the new rules – which is why we’ve written that it has effectively been banned. However, if the situation changes we will of course spring into action again to make sure this cruelty stops happening.
