Stop the Hamface Horror! Nigella Urged to Revamp Iconic Recipe this Halloween

London – Spooky season is upon us, and so is Hamface – the star of PETA’s new video created by Pablo London – a cancer-causing, processed meat monster that’s wreaking havoc with animals and our health. That’s why PETA sent a letter to celebrity cook and new The Great British Bake Off judge Nigella Lawson, urging her to stop the Hamface horror by switching her iconic ‘Ham in Coca-Cola’ recipe to vegan ham, which offers all the great taste, without the horrifying cruelty and health risks.

“Hamface’s killing spree is like so many Bake Off seasons: In tents. Happily, we know from your many luscious animal-free recipes that you have what it takes to stop the horror,” writes PETA Vice President of Vegan Projects Dawn Carr. “Updating your ‘Ham in Coca-Cola’ to feature healthy vegan ham instead of a pig’s bottom wouldn’t just be a mouthwatering step towards human health – it would help save gentle animals from being reduced to body parts.”

Pigs raised for their flesh are crammed by the thousands into concrete pens on filthy farms. The frustration and stress can drive them to engage in aggressive behaviour such as ear- and tail-biting, so farmers routinely cut off pigs’ tails and grind down their sensitive teeth, usually without painkillers. At around six months old, pigs from UK farms meet their death in gas chambers, where high concentrations of carbon dioxide form an acid on sensitive tissues such as the eyes and lungs, causing intense distress as they struggle desperately before losing consciousness. In addition to the immense cruelty, the products of pig slaughter are also disastrous to human health: the International Agency for Research on Cancer classifies processed meats like bacon and ham as Group 1 carcinogens alongside tobacco and asbestos.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any other way” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and fear, a pig is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on X, Facebook, or Instagram.
