Good News! Civet Coffee Dropped After PETA Push

Great news for civet cats! After hearing from over 24,000 PETA supporters, online retailer Rich Exclusive Coffee has agreed to end all sales of kopi luwak, a coffee sourced from the excrement of Asian palm civets who are caged for life.

We commend Rich Exclusive Coffee for removing this product of abuse from their shop. PETA Netherlands has sent the company a box of chocolates in thanks.

Thank you to everyone who joined our campaign and urged the company to cut ties with the cruel coffee. When we ask – they listen.

What Is Kopi Luwak?

Kopi luwak – also known as civet coffee or cat-poop coffee – is produced from beans excreted by civet cats. Following over a decade of investigations by PETA Asia into civet farms in Indonesia (Bali, Java) and the Philippines, more and more companies are dropping this cruel coffee.

Civet cats are kept in small, waste-filled cages with barely any room to move around. They are fed an unhealthy, unnatural diet of coffee cherries that causes their bodies to rapidly decline.

Even though they are nocturnal animals, the cages for most do not contain shelter or a darkened area where they could sleep during the day. Confined civets show clear signs of psychological stress, such as pacing frantically and bobbing their heads.

In PETA Asia’s most recent investigation in Java, one critically ill civet, who was too weak even to stand, lay motionless inside her squalid cage. PETA Asia’s investigator alerted the farm owner, who said that the animal should be “thrown away.”

Despite being a protected species under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora, Asian palm civet cats are typically captured when they’re about 6 months old and given almost nothing to eat except coffee cherries, which leads to malnutrition, skin conditions, and stomach aches.

Civet Cats Need Your Help

No coffee is worth imprisoning and tormenting wild animals. No matter which country you’re in or what assurances you’ve received, please, never buy or drink civet coffee.

Please also join us in urging Harrods and other outliers still peddling this cruelty in a cup to immediately reconsider its sale:
