Why PETA Protested at the 2026 Winter Olympics

Winter Olympics fans walking by central Milan today were met with a shocking sight: a trio of nearly nude PETA supporters – wearing nothing but beanie hats, ski goggles, and snow boots – standing behind a banner declaring, “We’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Feathers!”

The eye-popping plea served as a reminder that feather-filled winter clothing (which often features in cold-weather athletic gear) is the product of geese and ducks’ suffering.

Confined, Restrained, and Killed

Down refers to the soft feathers closest to the skin of ducks and geese.

PETA’s nine exposés of the down industry show birds on filthy factory farms where everything important to them is taken away. Ducks need access to water for their mental and physical health – but they are denied this on farms.

These birds are held down and killed at the slaughterhouse before having their feathers plucked from their still-warm bodies. Sometimes, they are plucked while still alive, which is excruciating for them.

A PETA Germany investigation shows slaughterhouse workers in the down industry in Poland – the world’s second-largest exporter of down – dragging ducks and geese across grated floors, kicking a duck with full force, and grabbing the animals by their legs or wings. Some birds were evidently conscious and still frantically flapping their wings or even trying to lift their heads after their throats were slit.

PETA Asia exposés of “responsible” down suppliers show workers at duck slaughterhouses in Vietnam stabbing birds in the neck and cutting off their feet while they were still conscious and struggling.

Gentle Animals

Ducks and geese are gentle, social animals who live in large groups in the natural world. Geese mate for life and mourn when their partner dies. Ducks are clean animals who tidy their nests. Yet millions of both species are languishing on factory farms – all so humans can rip the feathers out of their bodies for a piece of clothing.

Someone, Not Something

Every feather stuffed into a puffer jacket or vest was gruesomely torn from the body of a bird who was factory farmed in misery and violently killed. The only beings who should be wearing feathers are the birds themselves.

We are calling on Olympic athletes and fans alike to stay warm with innovative, high-quality, vegan outerwear that’s readily available on the high street. Save the Duck and NOIZE both offer high quality and cruelty-free vegan down coats.
