Will World Black Pudding Throwing Championships ‘Toss Out’ Cruelty and Go Vegan?

Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester – Ahead of Bury’s annual World Black Pudding Throwing Championships (13 September), PETA sent a letter to Stubbins Village Community Trust (SVCT), the event organisers, with a proposal: replace the fatty blood sausages with animal-friendly vegan black puddings – which are made locally by the Bury Black Pudding Company – and PETA will foot the bill. If they accept, PETA will also throw in some vegan Yorkshire puddings to complete the cruelty-free spectacle.

“Like Lancashire’s World Gravy Wrestling Championships – which proudly uses vegan gravy – the World Black Pudding Throwing Championships can spare animals and garner kudos by ‘pudding’ on a kinder, and more sustainable bloodless event,” says PETA Vice President of Vegan Projects Dawn Carr. “PETA urges the Stubbins Village Community Trust to give pigs a break and switch to a vegan competition that everyone can enjoy,” she says.

Pigs dream when they sleep, recognize their own names, and show empathy for other pigs who are happy or distressed. In the meat industry, they’re confined to filthy sheds, subjected to painful mutilations such as tail docking, and denied everything natural and important to them. Vegan black puddings – which are made from plant-based ingredients including black beans, barley, oats, and spices – are widely available and bring all the taste and tradition with none of the suffering. PETA offers a free vegan starter kit on its website for anyone thinking of making the switch.
