Dear Excellency, I was shocked to learn that young elephants are torn away from their mothers, tied up, terrorised and beaten in order to train them to give “joyrides”. PETA India recently commissioned an investigation of elephant training camps and found horrific abuse. Young elephants are tied out of reach of their mothers while they struggle and cry. They are then tied tightly to poles while people surround them and terrify them by hitting them, prodding them with sticks and waving flaming torches in their faces, sometimes singeing their sensitive skin. The animals are forced to wear spiked cuffs on their legs so trainers can make them walk in a certain way, and they are beaten for “mistakes”. This behind-the-scenes abuse will continue as long as elephant rides remain legal. I urge you to take a stand against this cruelty by banning the use of elephants for rides and promoting the protection of elephants in wildlife sanctuaries instead. I also urge you to immediately pass legislation that would protect elephants from this abuse. Yours
