Animals are harmed for food, fashion, experiments, and entertainment simply because their lives are seen as less than those of other species. The belief is called speciesism – and it causes suffering to animals every day.

Help End Cruel Sepsis Experiments on Animals

Sign the Petition
To: Home Office and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology Re: Stop the use of animals in sepsis experiments
Dear Ministers,

Despite decades of research and the suffering of countless animals, there is still no targeted therapy for sepsis and no reliable method for early diagnosis. Animal-based research is failing to provide meaningful treatments for this devastating human condition.

In UK laboratories, mice and rats are cut open, their intestines punctured so faecal matter leaks into their abdomen, before being stitched up and left to suffer as sepsis destroys their organs. These cruel experiments are scientifically invalid: sepsis in humans is distinct from sepsis in other animals, making the results of such tests unreliable and misleading.

Shockingly, over 150 drugs that successfully treated sepsis in animals all failed in human trials. The US National Institutes of Health has declared its move away from animal use in research, including in sepsis studies. The UK must keep pace with global developments and learnings.

Project licence applications for sepsis experiments involving animals should not pass the harm-benefit assessment and must not be granted. The Home Office must urgently implement a policy to reject new applications for such procedures, and amend existing licences to eliminate them entirely.

The Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology must also accelerate the shift towards humane, cutting-edge non-animal methods such as in vitro models, computational modelling, and AI tools that have the potential to save lives.

Together, we can lead the world in compassionate, state-of-the-art science without causing animals to suffer.

Sincerely,
