Dear Minister: I was deeply alarmed to learn that animals are subjected to immense and prolonged suffering during live export from Ireland to elsewhere in the EU, Kazakhstan, Libya, and Turkey, and that you are now planning to expand the industry by sending pigs to China. Transporting pigs halfway around the world to be used as breeding machines in China – where there are no laws to protect animals on farms – would cause these animals immense suffering. On top of animal welfare concerns, flying animals thousands of miles contributes to the climate crisis that others are working hard to mitigate and risks spreading disease that could even cause the next pandemic. Reports have shown that animals transported within the EU and beyond have to endure temperatures of up to 41.5 degrees, sometimes for days at a time. They commonly exhibit signs of exhaustion, and once they reach their destination, they are likely to face slaughter methods far crueller than would be allowed in Ireland. In 2019, over 200,000 cows were forced to make the long, harrowing journey from Ireland to continental Europe and thousands more were sent on even longer journeys to Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Libya, Tunisia, and Turkey. Exports to non-EU countries increased by over 50% in 2020. Live export is totally incompatible with animal welfare, and public opinion is against this cruel trade. Please do the right thing for animals and end all live exports from Ireland.
