PETA’s European Vegan Car Interior Survey

Today, more people than ever are choosing to eat and wear vegan. But what about car interiors? Can they be free of animal-derived materials? We receive more and more enquiries about animal-free car interiors, so we’ve made it easy for you to check which cars align with your ethics and lifestyle by asking major car brands about their available vegan models and editions.

What Does ‘Vegan Interior’ Mean?

In cars with vegan interiors, no animal-derived materials – like leather or wool – are used for the surfaces, including the seats, panelling, steering wheel, and gear stick.

Please note that interior options may differ from country to country, so the availability of a vegan interior is not always guaranteed. Only the latest versions of car models are listed. Please contact your local dealer for clarification if in doubt.

What’s Wrong With Leather and Wool?

An estimated 35 million cow hides are used per year to create interiors for the automotive industry, making it one of the biggest co-financiers of the farming and slaughter of cows.

Calves are branded on the face, and cows and bulls are electroshocked and beaten before eventually being slaughtered so that their skin can be made into leather interiors offered by the world’s largest car companies.

On average, it takes the skin of three cows to cover the interior of a standard car. Some vehicles require as many as 15.

Sheep have been selectively bred to produce far more wool than is natural. Exposés from around the world have documented that these gentle animals are violently beaten, mutilated, and even killed during rough shearing, after which their fleece is made into fabrics used for seats and panelling. Once they’ve outlived their usefulness to the industry, they’re sent to slaughter.

The production of animal-derived materials is as toxic to the planet as it is cruel to animals. Vegan fabrics – even synthetics – have a far smaller environmental footprint, and many are sustainable, innovative, and durable.

What You Can Do

Get in touch with companies! It’s great to see so many of the biggest names in the automobile industry fast-track the use of eco-friendly vegan fabrics that no animal had to die for – like apple and grape leather – in their vehicles. But some companies are still in the slow lane.

Remember: your feedback matters. If a car company doesn’t currently offer vegan interiors, be sure to contact it and encourage it to introduce them.
