Video: PETA Activists Invade Bullfighting Arena, Arrested, and Jailed
Nîmes, France – On Friday, during the opening bullfight of the Feria des Vendanges, PETA France activists invaded the bullring to protest bullfighting cruelty. One of the protestors, French content creator Jermstar, held a sign reading ‘F*ck the bullfight,’ and was violently pushed to the ground and dragged out of the arena by several men. One of the other activsts broke his foot before he was apprehended. All three have been in custody since Friday night.
A video of the action is available here , and photos are available here , here , here , here , and here .
“I wanted to take part in this action alongside PETA because watching images of bulls being tortured to death during bullfights shocked me and should chill the blood of anyone with a modicum of empathy,” says Jeremstar. “There is no justification for stabbing terrified animals or applauding as they slowly die in the ring. That’s torture, not culture!”
Every year, thousands of bulls are killed in bullfighting events in Europe. In the bullring, animals are chased, tormented, and stabbed with banderillas. Eventually, when the bull becomes weak from blood loss, a matador appears and attempts to kill the animal by plunging a knife into his lungs. In some cases, a knife is used to cut his spinal cord, and the bull is paralyzed but still alive when dragged from the ring. His ears or tail are sometimes cut off to be kept as trophies.
In France, 75% of the population supports banning bullfighting, and PETA France is calling on the public to write to the mayors of bullfighting towns to ask them to ban these bloody spectacles in their areas.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to use for entertainment or abuse in any way” – points out that Every Animal Is Someone and offers free Empathy Kits. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
