Photos of the Day: Hundreds March Against Fur in Finland
Finland is one of the world’s biggest fur producers, farming more foxes and raccoon dogs for their skins than any other country.
But more and more compassionate Finns are standing up against the cruelty and demanding an end to this barbaric industry, in which nearly 4 million sensitive wild animals a year are kept in cramped wire cages on factory farms for their entire lives and denied everything that is natural and important to them.
Undercover investigations have documented severe neglect and cruelty on Finnish fur farms time and time again. In some of the harrowing footage, animals can be heard screaming and throwing themselves against the sides of their cages in desperation and terror.
On Thursday, hundreds of people took to the streets of Helsinki to call for a ban on these abhorrent facilities in a protest organised by the Finnish animal rights group Animalia.
Animalia also delivered a petition against fur farming to the government signed by 200,000 people – including tens of thousands of compassionate PETA supporters. Thank you to everyone who signed!
This is an exciting time in the movement against fur. Sweden has also seen growing opposition to fur farms and recently phased out fox and chinchilla farms completely. And in Ireland, there are now only three mink farms left, a clear sign that the barbaric industry is on the way out.
