‘Pugs’ and ‘Bulldogs’ Gasp for Air in Birmingham to Raise Awareness of Crufts Cruelty
Earlier today (5 March), PETA supporters dressed as pugs and gathered in central Birmingham wearing breathing masks and carrying Oxygen tanks.
Gasping for Air, Pain, and Early Death

Flat-faced dogs, including Boston terriers and shih tzus, have been bred to have shortened snouts, meaning they struggle to get enough air.
This has a severe impact on their quality of life, making it impossible for many of them to run, chase a ball, or enjoy other things that make dogs’ lives meaningful. Flat-faced dogs will generally have a shorter lifespan than other dogs. All this because humans want dogs with distorted features – and profit-driven breeders meet that demand.
Flat-Faced Dogs at Crufts
The Kennel Club’s Crufts glorifies the breeding of ‘pedigree’ dogs – including those with flat faces. The BBC announced it would stop airing Crufts in 2008 over concerns about dog health, and the RSPCA has condemned the event. But it continues to take place at Birmingham’s NEC each year, and Channel 4 still airs it.
