The Way He Was: Robert Redford’s Work for Animals
Robert Redford was a staunch defender of animals and the environment. When he learned from PETA US that rabbits on angora farms suffer immensely as their fur is torn from their skin while they’re still alive, his Sundance Holdings Group removed all angora from its broad selection of chic cardigans and jumpers online.
Long an advocate for horses, Redford joined forces with the former governor of New Mexico, US, Bill Richardson, to form the Foundation to Protect New Mexico Wildlife, a group whose first order of business was to block proposed horse slaughterhouses in New Mexico and Iowa.
Redford was a signatory on a letter to Congress opposing a plan to allow tens of thousands of wild horses and burros to be rounded up, slaughtered, or sold. When he directed the classic film A River Runs Through It, Redford made sure all the fish were fake.
As enduring and memorable as so many of his films are, Robert Redford will also forever be remembered for making the world a better place for animals.
