Cruelty Stopped: Suffolk Mega-Farm Plans Rejected Thanks to PETA Supporters
Plans for a massive chicken factory farm in Shadingfield, East Suffolk, have been officially scrapped – a huge win for animals, the planet, and compassionate people everywhere. And it’s thanks in large part to pressure from PETA supporters.
Over 24,000 compassionate supporters joined the call for East Suffolk Council to reject the proposal – thank you to everyone who signed our petition! The plan would have condemned around 1 million chickens a year to a miserable life without ever seeing daylight. These birds would have endured filthy and overcrowded conditions. Thankfully, the council listened.
We applaud the council for doing right by animals, the planet, and the local community. Intensive farming is a death sentence for animals and a disaster for the environment. We urge all councils to follow suit and reject future applications for cruel and destructive factory farms.
The Cruel Reality Behind the Mega-Farm Proposal
Had it gone ahead, the facility would have confined close to a million chickens a year to barren sheds with no natural light or stimulation, stripping them of any opportunity to behave naturally. These birds are bred to grow so unnaturally fast that many suffer from painful leg deformities, heart failure, and organ failure. At abattoirs, many are still conscious when their throats are slit, and some are even scalded alive in defeathering tanks.
But it’s not just animals who would have suffered. Factory farms like this pollute local waterways, generate unbearable noise, odour and traffic, and tarnish the reputation of the surrounding countryside. On a global scale, they’re a major driver of the climate catastrophe.
What’s Next? A Kinder Way to Farm
This good news proves that collective action works – and we’re not stopping here.
There’s a better way: plant-based farming. The National Food Strategy revealed that 85% of UK agricultural land is used for animal agriculture. That’s wasteful, inefficient, and harmful. Raising animals to be slaughtered, and growing crops to feed them, uses vast amounts of land, water, and energy, and contributes to deforestation, biodiversity loss, pollution, and climate breakdown.
It’s time for the government to support farmers in switching to ethical, sustainable, plant-based agriculture. We need more growers producing oats, grains, beans, nuts, vegetables, and fruit – not more abattoirs.
Together, we can build a food system that’s kind to animals, better for the planet, and healthier for everyone.
