Cooked Canine? PETA Dishes Up a Reality Check at Meatopia Glasgow with Barbecued ‘Dog’
12.06.2026
Glasgow – PETA supporters turned up the heat at Meatopia Glasgow today (12 June) by “grilling” a lifelike “dog” on a barbecue emblazoned with the message “If You Wouldn’t Eat a Dog, Why Eat a Pig? Go Vegan!” The spectacle included a “chef” who challenged festivalgoers to recognise the inherent speciesism in eating the flesh of one animal, whilst being disgusted at the idea of eating the flesh of another. Whether they’re a dog, a pig, or any other thinking, feeling individual, eating animals is unethical.

“Pigs love to snuggle, play with toys, and wag their tails, and they don’t want to be grilled and eaten any more than the dogs we share our homes with,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “PETA urges everyone to consider who is on their plate and to ditch the deadly double standards by going vegan.”
Pigs are soothed by music, love playing ball, sleep in “pig piles,” and even enjoy getting massages. But in the meat industry, workers chop off piglets’ tails, clip their teeth with pliers, castrate the males, and force them into intense confinement before their throats are slashed in abattoirs. Each person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year, dramatically shrinks their carbon footprint, and reduces their risk of suffering from cancer, heart disease, strokes, diabetes, and obesity. PETA offers free vegan starter kits to help anyone thinking of making the switch.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and fear, a pig is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on Facebook, X, TikTok, or Instagram.
