Cow Urges Londoners to “Put Down the Cheeseburger” at McDonald’s Butcher Pop-Up

London – As McDonald’s invites visitors behind the counter at its Shoreditch butcher shop pop-up to discover what goes into its beef patties, PETA encouraged them to consider who goes into them. Today, the animal protection group peddled two mobile billboards bearing the message “Save a Life, Put Down the Cheeseburger!” in front of the event, reminding consumers that true transparency means acknowledging that every beef burger comes from a sensitive, intelligent cow who did not want to die.

“Every burger served at McDonald’s was once part of a thinking, feeling being who valued their life, just as we value ours,” says PETA Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen. “PETA urges everyone to leave animals off their plates and choose kind, vegan options like the McPlant, which offer all the taste without a side order of cruelty.”

Cows are intelligent, sensitive individuals who form strong social bonds and mourn losses. But in the meat industry, they’re torn away from their families, crammed into filthy pens and castrated, dehorned, and branded without pain relief. At the slaughterhouse, workers shoot cows in the head with a captive-bolt gun, hang them up by one leg, and slit their throat—often while they’re still conscious.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any way” – notes that major fast food chains, including McDonald’s, Burger King, and Wimpy, offer vegan burgers nationwide, making kind choices easier than ever, and points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a cow is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on FacebookTwitterTikTok, or Instagram
