London – With an estimated five tonnes of chicken consumed at Notting Hill Carnival each year, PETA supporters dressed in colourful feather-free costumes took to the streets today to hand out vegan chicken, from Temple of Seitan, to revellers in an effort to encourage the public to choose animal-friendly options that leave birds in peace, not pieces.

“Notting Hill Carnival is famous for its vibrant culture, energy, and food, and we’re showing festivalgoers that vegan chicken deserves a place in the celebration, too,” says PETA Senior Campaigns Manager Kate Werner. “By choosing vegan chicken, people can enjoy all the flavour while sparing sensitive, intelligent birds from a miserable life and a terrifying death.”

PETA notes that chickens form complex social relationships, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do. Yet in the meat industry, they’re bred to grow so unnaturally large that many suffer from painful leg deformities, heart problems, and other debilitating conditions. At just weeks old, they’re loaded onto lorries and transported to slaughterhouses, where they’re gassed or electrocuted and their throats are slit.
