Tennis Club Urged to Remove Chicken from Menus After Geese Cull Outrage
Weybridge, Surrey – Following reports that eight Canada geese were killed at St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club, prompting outrage amongst members, PETA sent a letter to club Chair Miles Hill urging the club to remove chicken from its restaurant menus. The move, PETA says, would reflect members’ compassion for birds and allow something positive to come from the upsetting episode.
PETA’s letter (available here) notes that chickens and Canada Geese are the same in all the ways that matter. Both are intelligent, sensitive individuals who feel pain and fear, form close social bonds, and value their lives.
“Members were heartbroken to learn that these geese had been killed, yet every chicken sandwich or burger served at the club comes from a bird who wanted to live, too,” says PETA Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen. “PETA is urging St George’s Hill Lawn Tennis Club to leave birds in peace, not pieces. It can start by taking chickens off the menu.”
Chickens can distinguish between more than 100 faces of their own species, have full-colour vision, and experience rapid eye movement sleep, which means they dream just like we do. Yet those raised and killed for their flesh are crammed by the tens of thousands into filthy, windowless sheds. At the abattoir, they’re shackled upside down, their throats are slit, and they’re scalded in defeathering tanks – sometimes while still conscious.
PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat or abuse in any way” points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a chicken is a dog is a boy.
