RNLI and Coastguard Named PETA Heroes After Rescuing Sparkle the Dog

When Sparkle, a dog, fell into rough seas off the coast of East Lothian, the situation quickly became life‑threatening. Fast action by the North Berwick RNLI and the Coastguard saved Sparkle’s life and has earned them a PETA Hero to Animals Award.

The Rescue

Last February, Sparkle, a 10-year-old dog, slipped off a harbour wall and fell four meters into the sea, along with her two guardians, who rushed in to help her. Choppy conditions and cold water quickly turned the situation life-threatening.

Emergency services were alerted, and volunteers from the North Berwick RNLI and the Coastguard Rescue Team responded within minutes. Coastguard team members rescued the two people from the water, and waded through heavy sea foam and rough surf to lift Sparkle to safety using specialist animal rescue equipment. Sparkle and her guardians were reunited on shore.

Why PETA Is Recognising This Rescue

PETA is recognising the rescue to highlight the importance of fast, coordinated action when animals are in danger.

Jamie Humpage, Station Officer, North Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team, said: “The team are honoured to receive the PETA Hero to Animals award for rescuing Sparkle back in February. We had over 100 call-outs last year, but it’s rescues like this that stick in the mind.”

Take Action for Dogs Who Aren’t So Lucky

While Sparkle’s story has a happy ending, many dogs are not so lucky.

Each year, dogs bred to meet extreme, arbitrary, physical standards develop breathing problems, painful joint conditions, and lifelong health issues. Rather than helping protect “man’s best friend”, The Kennel Club and Crufts, encourage these cruel breeding practices.

Please help us help dogs by urging Channel 4 to stop broadcasting dog shows that promote harmful breeding.
