‘Giant Babies’ Urge Festivalgoers to Ditch Dairy

PETA supporters dressed as giant inflatable babies descended on Gloucestershire’s famous Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling event today (Monday, 25 May), urging attendees to swap dairy for vegan cheese.

The centuries-old event sees people chase a rolling wheel of cheese downhill in front of large crowds. The colourful protest saw giant babies in nappies and bibs holding signs reading “Gaga for Vegan Cheese” and “Cow’s Milk Is for Baby Cows. Go Vegan!” near the race start point. While the towering tots urged people to leave cow families in peace by going vegan, several runners tore the signs from the babies and tampered with their costumes.

It’s Time to Ditch Dairy

The Cheese-Rolling event desperately needs to move with the times and ditch dairy. Cows are mothers who produce milk for their calves. In the dairy industry, they are repeatedly impregnated and their babies are taken away shortly after birth so the milk can be sold to humans.

Mother cows form strong bonds with their babies, and being separated is hugely distressing for them. They often cry and bellow for days after they’re gone. If the baby is female, she will likely be raised for dairy herself. If he is male, he may be killed, raised for beef, or sold to the veal industry.

After years of repeated forced pregnancies and milk production, mother cows are sent to slaughter when their bodies wear out.

With plant-based cheeses now widely available in UK shops, the public – and Cooper’s Hill Cheese-Rolling event – has plenty of options to replace dairy and spare cows so much unecessary suffering
