MPs Call for King’s Guard’s Caps to be Made With Faux Fur

MPs including Ruth Jones, Irene Campbell, Adrian Ramsey, Paula Barker, and Neil Duncan-Jordan are calling on the government to end the use of real bear fur for  the King’s Guard’s caps – and switch to a humane faux fur instead.

Gathering together at Parliament Square in London earlier today, the MPs held up a banner reading, “Bears Killed for the King’s Guards’ Caps. MoD: Go Fur Free” and a bear sign stating, “MoD: Go Fur-Free!”

They are part of a large number  of parliamentarians backing the campaign that condemns the use of fur from slaughtered black bears being used in the purely ornamental  headwear – and urging the Ministry of Defence to act. Over 80 MPs signed EDM 2907 calling on government to heed the will of the public and Parliament and switch to faux fur.

Cruelty Behind the Caps

Each bearskin cap costs at least one bear their life. The fur comes from bears killed in Canada, where hunters bait them with piles of sweet, sticky food before shooting them at close range with guns and high powered crossbows.

Many are shot multiple times and left to suffer – some stagger away and die slowly from blood loss, infection, starvation, or dehydration.

Mother bears are also killed, leaving their cubs to starve.

Rising Orders, Rising Death Toll

Despite growing public opposition, orders for bearskin caps are rising sharply.

Figures recently obtained by PETA showed that orders shot up from 22 caps in 2024 to 96 in 2025 – a staggering 336% increase.

Each cap costs taxpayers more than £2,300, which has also risen by 8% in the same time period. Public money is funding the continued killing of wildlife.

Time for Change

MPs are urging the government to align its actions with its promises on animal welfare and adopt high-quality faux fur for the caps, which is readily available.

There is simply no excuse to continue using real bear fur.

It’s time to end the government’s support for the slaughter of wildlife overseas – and spare bears from suffering and death for an ornamental hat.

Take Action for Bears Today

Tell the government that bears should never be shot, skinned, and made into hats, and that the MoD must develop a high-tech faux fur instead.
