PETA Makes Bid for ‘Chicken Shop Date’ Rights

London – Following Amelia Dimoldenberg’s announcement that Chicken Shop Date is ending after 12 years, PETA has made an offer to buy the rights to the hit series and give it a whole new lease of life: this time, the chickens would be the dates, not the dinner.

In a letter sent to Dimoldenberg (available here), PETA proposes turning the tables on the original format by inviting famous faces to go on dates with chickens at an animal sanctuary, where they would get to know the birds’ unique personalities and discover just how clever, curious, and charming they can be.

“For years, chickens have been at the heart of Chicken Shop Date – but as wings, nuggets, and other body parts on the table,” says PETA UK Vice President of Programmes Elisa Allen. “We’d love to give the show a fitting new chapter that puts chickens in the spotlight rather than on the menu. And, of course, we hope Amelia will come along for the date.”

PETA notes that chickens form complex social relationships, dream when they sleep, and worry about the future, just as humans do. Yet in the meat industry, they’re bred to grow so unnaturally large that many suffer from painful leg deformities, heart problems, and other debilitating conditions. At just weeks old, they’re loaded onto lorries and transported to slaughterhouses, where they’re gassed or electrocuted and their throats are slit. PETA offers a guide to The UK’s Best Vegan Fried Chicken for anyone wishing to leave chickens in peace, not pieces.

PETA – whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to abuse in any way” – points out that when it comes to the ability to feel pain, hunger, and thirst, a chicken is a dog is a boy. For more information, please visit PETA.org.uk or follow PETA on Facebook, XTikTok, or Instagram.
