In sepsis experiments, researchers cut open live mice and rats and deliberately puncture their intestines to allow faecal matter to leak out. At the end, they are killed.

These experiments not only torment animals, but they have also failed to produce a single successful treatment for humans. Yet these sepsis experiments remain overlooked in the Government’s animal-free science strategy.

I recently discovered that mice, who are sentient beings capable of feeling pain just like us, are being used in cruel and ineffective sepsis experiments at Queen Mary University.

Mice are being cut open and having their intestines punctured to release faecal matter into their abdomens, causing sepsis. They then suffer the agonising symptoms of the disease before being killed, harvested for body parts and discarded.

Are you aware that Francis Collins, the former director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the US, previously stated that sepsis in mice significantly differs from sepsis in humans? He also said that sepsis mouse experiments have led to a “heartbreaking loss of decades of research and billions of dollars.”

No animal experiment to date has led to a single targeted, effective drug or treatment for sepsis. This realisation has led major bodies, like the NIH, to move away from using mice in sepsis research. The University of Kent also recently committed to not using animals in their sepsis research.

Please make the logical and ethical decision to end these cruel and ineffective experiments now – for the sake of both mice and humans.
